What make of DVD disc to use

Post by Capricorn12 »

Reluctantly I have just filmed a wedding for a nephew of mine. I used 2 cameras with one set up on a tripod and the other handheld on a monopod. The tripod mounted one was near an aircon unit so I had to use the sound from the handheld one whilst mixing the video from both. This has worked well by splitting the audio from the handheld. My main problem is that burning an avchd disc onto a Verbatim printable blank works but the blu-ray player, a Samsung, vibrates quite badly for the first 5 minutes or so. This seems to be because the disc is spinning very fast and may be unbalanced a tad. This has happened on other avchd discs using the same media but does not happen when burning to some TDK RW discs although 3 out of 10 of these have failed so are not very good. So what DVD blanks do other people use? I read somewhere about 2 reliable makes, one of them being Verbatim, which I have used for years.

Does it only happen on the Samsung player or also on other players?
I use Verbatim all the time and have never had a problem. Of course you may have gotten a bad Verbatim batch.

It is worth doing what Canuck suggests and try the disk on another machine. The vibration sounds like a machine fault. It would be rare to have a set of disks that have off centered holes. The spindle in the machine may have a segment loose or missing.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Sadly I have not had chance to try on another machine yet. I took the DVD to my daughter who has a Samsung blu-ray player one model higher than mine but it can't play avchd discs! I find it odd that a DVD RW with the same film on is silent but I will try it on another player if I can. Thanks for the replies.
p.s. this has never happened on any standard dvd I have burned past and present.

So what Samsung BlueRay player model do you (and your daughter) have? Is yours capable of playing an AVCHD disc?

Comparing standard video DVDs to AVCHD or BlueRay discs is meaningless.

My Samsung player is a BDH 5500 and the handbook states it is compatible with avchd. My daughters player is a BDH 6500 and it wont see an avchd disc but I have not checked the handbook. The only reason I mention the standard DVD is that I have been recording this format for years with no problems like this. I know the spin speed is much higher on an avchd disc and think it is this that is causing the problem. The spin speed is obviously higher at the centre of the disc which will be at the start of playback so this coincides with my problem.

Both players are able to play AVCHD discs according to the users manual. But of course there are quite a few exceptions and conditions.

Went to my sons today and took the offending avchd disc and played it on his ps3 system and the disc vibrated at the start. Not as much as mine but his player is more substantial than mine so it looks like it is the discs. I will order more discs tomorrow. Thanks again chaps.

Well as time was marching on I bought some more Verbatim printable DVDs with a different product code and recorded 2 discs. The result was that both discs showed the menu but refused to play. They just chugged a bit and returned to the menu. Both lots of disc are azo? Its now find a disc that WILL record or buy a blu-ray burner and go down that route. The bride and groom are coming round on wednesday to see an edit of the film so it should be fun!!!

Hi

There is a lot of talk about Bluray - Avchd and DVD, I assume you are trying to burn a standard DVD

Have you tried creating a Disc Image, an Iso file rather than burning the disc.

That will check the authoring process, you can play the ISO using VLC Media Player which will play the menu structure.
If there is a problem playing that then its a software / program issue.

If it plays ok then the actual disc burning process, maybe the drive is faulty, but at least you have a computer copy of the disc to show your client

Once you have a good ISO it can be burned to a disc using several programs, Windows has a Disc Image recorder, right click the ISO -- Open With - Windows Disc Image Burner

Video studio from tools can also burn Iso's to disc.

I note from the specification that the blu-ray player has a USB port - - have you considered copying the final file to a USB stick and playing to the TV from that.

I did try putting the file on a memory stick early on but could not get it to work in the usb port of the player.

In desperation I bought some non printable Sony DVDs from a supermarket this afternoon and burned avchd to it. The player would not see it. It just said it was a DVD. Another burned with an iso file was the same. I am now getting really frustrated but will find the cause. It may be my burner, the discs or my player but I will find out.
