Video Studio X8 Ultimate - video settings

Post by DaisyK »

I purchased VS X8 Ultimate and I am loving it and learning more all the time. But I have an area of knowledge (a mighty big area) where I am floundering.

If I record a video in HD with my Sony video camera, such as for a church announcement, and then project that file played from my computer, it is much smaller in size than if I create a DVD and play it through the DVD player. Or if I upload it to Youtube and play it from there it is full size. So.... as an example if I render it as an MP4 file the settings that appear as it renders is the same as what I am projecting at the church. We use ProPresenter 5 worship software and the settings in preferences are the same as the rendering settings.

Total confusion for me is why is the computer projected image different than the DVD projected image?

Another example... and I am quite aware of all the copyright issues. We use Watchword Bible occasionally, which is Bible scripture with background image, printed scripture and voice scripture reading. DVD works beautifully for projected verses IF pastor starts at the beginning of a section. My DVD player won't hold for long for a mid chapter playing of that section so once in a while I rip that section to play through the computer. Same problem! The DVD plays full screen, the ripped section does not. And yes I can burn that section to a DVD but....

I really would like to learn what is different for a video file vs a DVD setting. I am not at my computer that I use for video rendering in order to give you exact settings. Plus.... I don't know exactly what I should be looking at. Can anyone give me any help? What do I need to check ? Once I know where to look I can tell you what my version is set at.

Just to make sure I am understanding you.

A dvd played through a dvd player plays full screen projected size.
A video file played through the pc is small.

Is a dvd played through the pc small?

What are you using on the pc to play the video file?

You make lots of mention of settings being the same, so yes, it would help if you could tell us what size the original video is when recorded, when edited and when projected and your monitor settings.

I went back to the church after I read your reply to try to get exactly what happens. Then I came home and checked file properties.

We use ProPresenter 5 software on our projection PC to display hymns, video files, PowerPoint, etc. The video files I mention are played as any file by adding it to the playlist. When clicked it displays from the projector to the screen.

ProPresenter resolution 1920 x 1080
Computer screen resolution 1600 x 900
Projector is set at 4:3 HDMI: Auto (all the files play full screen except the video files I have rendered in VS8 Ultra)

I played the same DVD disc through the DVD player and they are full screen
I played them through the DVD playback in ProPresenter (very glitchy and unreliable so I never use it) and it plays full screen
I played several formats of the same section ripped from this same test DVD as added to the playlist and they are 4:3 but do not fill the screen. There is space on each side of the projected image.

Then I went back home and checked properties of this ripped section BEFORE doing a render and it says it is 24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3 Frame rate 29.970 (It imports a mpg)

So that must mean that I am not ripping video correctly. But that does not explain a video from my Sony video camera set at HD.

How can I get some screen capture files to you of the different files I am trying to explain? Can I put them in a pdf and get them to you some how?

Try downloading a free background clip from http://www.motionworship.com/free-worsh ... ackground/ and then use it's specs to create your file. Or use the specs as shown on http://support.renewedvision.com/index. ... ecommended.
Personally I would just keep my camera's aspect ratio for future proofing. (ProPresenter does an anamorphic scaling to the 16:9 clip for 4:43 display).
