Files from VS12 to X5
I have 2 problems:
I still have VS12 on my computer (in case I had any back compatibility problems). I use VS X5. When I try to load an X5 VSP file by double clicking, it loads into VS12 & then says it's not compatible! If I drag & drop into X5 instead. it loads the file as a complete lump, not the individual parts. If I look at the file properties, it says it's a VS12 file, even though it was created in X5. Do I have to uninstall VS12 or is there something I can change?
I have loaded some short m2ts video files into X5. If I press play project, it plays happily. If I press play clip on any of the half dozen clips, it pauses, then the whole program quits with a tuneful plink-plonk sound. I've never had that before. I have a dozen of these small projects, just a few minutes each, one for each day of the holiday...
Help please.

Re: Files from VS12 to X5
Hi John
Opening a project by double clicking will run the program having the correct files association, this is targeting the “vstudio.exe” file.
If you have more than one program installed then yes it may choose the wrong program.
You could try setting the files association to X5’s vstudio.exe. but I think it is firmly set in the registry, it can be edited there unfortunately I do not know exactly how to do that now, I did manage quite a while ago, the memory is not what it used to be.
The easiest way is to run video studio X5 from its program icon not the VSP.
Once X5 is running double clicking the vsp will open ok.
Otherwise uninstall VS12, but if you are having problems finishing the 12 vsp projects in X5 then you may be best to complete those using VS12, that’s if you have saved the VS12 project files as VS12?
X5 installation
There are a few patches for X5 have you installed those?
Maybe help with the crashing issues?

If you drag and drop any .vsp into the timeline it will appear as a solid lump
have you tried starting X5 - then going to "File >> Open project" and browsing to the .vsp file and selecting it - that is usually the best way to get old projects into newer versions. be aware that you may get a few problems if some of the features you used in 12 are not available in X5

Re: Files from VS12 to X5
OK, I've been on the Corel website & found 2 updates - service packs 1 & 2. However, when I try & install them I get the message - installed version could not be determined. Setup terminated...
A quick look down my list of downloads & I see service pack 2 was installed May 2013! So that won't have cured my crashing problem.

Yes that message is Corels very strange way of telling you that the service pack is already installed
you can always check the latest service pack level of your installation by opening the Corel Guide - clicking on the two little gear wheels in the top right corner and choosing the "about Corel VideoStudio" option - the second block of letters tells you the level - for instance yours should show 12.2 . ....
in later versions you can go "Help >> About" but I can't remember if X5 had that option

Hi
Yes Brian you are correct....
To check the version number of X5 click the orange wheel top right, that opens the Corel Guide
Select the cogwheels top right for About Corel Video Studio
My version show as 15.2 .0.10
The “2” in that number indicates that SP2 has been installed.
There is no help menu option for X5.

Re: Files from VS12 to X5
I've taken a 7 second bit of m2ts video, converted it to mp4 & put it in a new X5 project. Both clip & project selections play perfectly. Do the same with the original m2ts version & the clip selection crashes while the project selection plays!
Hmm! Should I convert all my video clips to mp4? I had trouble with my last holiday where a few m2ts videos wouldn't load until I converted them to mp4, but all the other m2ts clips loaded & played without problem! What's happening now? What could have changed? All very frustrating.
By the way: it took 6 months to complete, but I ended up with a very nice Kenya DVD. Brazil has produced not quite so much exciting wildlife, but some wonderful sounds. If I can ever sort out the DVD, it will sound brilliant!

Re: Files from VS12 to X5
Hi John
Can you tell us the properties of the M2TS video files, right click a clip and choose properties, Create an image of the window and attach to your post.
I have a Panasonic 900 series camcorder, I know Brian uses similar / same files with no issues.
What camera are you using? where do the video files come from?
If possible can you upload a sample or two to a sharing site so we can download and try on our pc’s.
Try Windows Microsoft One Drive or Google Drive, Drop Box would also do.
If you need to convert your original video files then use the format that would be used for your final production, so if you intend to burn a standard DVD then Mpeg2 should be used.
It does seem strange that MTS files are causing any problems??????

I've posted a short video at http://www.imixmics.plus.com/Brazil.html - at the bottom of the page. It only runs 7 secs, but does show up the fault I mentioned previously. I've tried to attach the properties window. Not done it before - hope it works!
Sorry, forgot to add - camera is Panasonic FZ1000
AVCHD

Image sensor o/p 25p

Re: Files from VS12 to X5
Hi John
First of all, nice pics on your web site
And yes the image you provided does show, however more details will be given if you right click a clip in VS timeline or library. But I have downloaded your latest sample, the properties are below.
Are you having problems with all your recordings or just the odd one?
Your last posts referred to twitches which we seemed to cure by disabling Smart Render.
There were some files that we could not load.
Panasonic did create there own video versions I think called “Panasonic Lite” – tweaking the codecs, maybe its that that VS X5 does not like.
This current file 2015-06-20_160604.m2ts does not play correctly in X5, it scrolls for a few seconds then plays to the end in 1 second.
Using X7 loads and plays ok, although a bit jerky, but that’s the recording a bit shaky.
The properties of the file is :_
MPEG Transport-Stream Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 22876 kbps)
Audio data rate: 192 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
You should use these properties to create the final video, if you are intending to burn a bluray disc.
Video Studio X8 worked ok as did X7.
Video Studio versions.
X5 is quite old, the later versions do work better with HD video files, I think you should consider updating your program.
Post Updated
I rendered the sample using X8 and my Pana video properties
The new video opens in X5 and plays ok, I assume there will be no problems editing?
The main difference is the data rate being a little lower.

Re: Files from VS12 to X5
Thank you.
The problem does seem to affect all the videos I've checked.
It all sounds rather too difficult. I think I'll convert them all to mp4. I will end up with one Bluray copy & some SD DVD copies for friends. I'm sure mp4 will give good enough quality for my Bluray version. It certainly worked well for the Kenya disc.

The 7 sec clip plays without any problems on ny PC in X7 except for a little movement due I presume to hand holding at quite a high zoom

Re: Files from VS12 to X5
Hi
Your best option is to upgrade to the latest version of video studio, however that may mean upgrading the PC as well..
If you do need to convert the video you may be best using Transport Stream, that at least is Bluray compliant, as is your video files.
When I converted the file it opened and played ok using X5, view the details in my earlier post.
If you convert to Mp4 you will have to convert again to Transport Stream burn a Bluray disc. I don’t see any point in using MP4

Re: Files from VS12 to X5
I'm afraid upgrading either software or computer is not an option.
Trevor, when you say convert to Transport Stream, how do I do that? Format Factory doesn't seem to offer that as an option. The reason for using mp4 is that that format plays on my X5 for the purposes of editing.
One way which I've used in the past would be to edit the package using all mp4 video clips, then replace them with the m2ts version before rendering. The m2ts clips all play perfectly happily as part of the project, it's only trying to play them as individual clips that causes the crash. Rather tedious, but possible.
Thank you for the advice. It would be nice to know why my X5 no longer likes my m2ts files. Another of life's little mysteries!
