Capturing in Windows 7 with VS 11

Post by ESP1138 »

I have been using VideoStudio 11 on Windows Vista for seven years without too many problems. I have been transferring analog video like VHS and LaserDisc to my notebook PC using Grass Valley ADVC-110 with 6-pin to 4-pin Firewire.

Now I wanted to do the same with my Dell T7500 using 6 to 6 pin Firewire with Windows 7. VS 11 never detects the capture device; it just hangs interminably. I know the PC detected the cable because it notified me of a plug in.

I want to know if VS 11 work with Windows 7 or is there something I missed?

Quick update. Now my reliable notebook PC with Vista will no longer capture video with VS 11. What gives? I replaced the Firewire cable which stopped working some weeks ago. I bought a good quality cable by Belkin from Fry's Electronics.

The moment I start the capturing button, VS 11 stops after a few seconds and crashes. Curiously I can capture just fine with Windows Import Video with no problems.

Will your link regarding a bad Microsoft update fix this problem?

Hi

As far as I remember Video Studio 11 had some problems with capturing, whether that was Analogue or DV-Avi capture I cannot say. Unfortunately VS11 is the only version I did not use, at the time I would have been capturing via firewire.
I have never run VS 11 with Windows 7 so cannot comment on its functionality, its quite old being one of the first to be releases after Corel took over Ulead, maybe time to consider a newer version.

The firewire driver was also a problem as mentioned in Kens reply.
Searching Microsoft came up with this info.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2970191

Reverting the Firewire driver back to the (legacy) driver may work for you, I cannot say it’s a definite fix but only by trying will you know. Besides its easy to revert back, simply remove the driver and allow windows to install the default driver.

If firewire capture used to work ok for you then whats changed?

I do not think the wrong Firewire driver caused the program to crash, just unable to recognise the connection.
So I don’t understand why the crashes?
Have you installed all patches for VS 11

Given that VS 11 may be problematic in capturing video I would suggest installing the free WinDV capture device, certainly should work with Windows 7, easy to install and no malware.
The program also allows you to choose a file name rather than the name given by VS.
