Select layer transparency?

Post by smithsrus »

Newbie to Paintshop Pro, long-time user of Photoshop. What is the equivalent of Photoshop's "select layer transparency" in PSP? I need to select the non-empty part of a layer to crop to the selection removing the extra space. I've looked in help and maybe I'm not searching for the right term, can't find how to do this simple thing anywhere. :?:

There are two ways to do this.

1) Grab the "Selection" tool and on the very end of the tool options palette there are three buttons under the title "Create selection from"
One of them is "Layer Opaque" when you press that it'll create a square selection that encompasses all of the opaque areas of the image.

You can then use Image -> Crop to selection

or

2) Grab the "Crop" tool and at the very end of the tool options palette there are three buttons under the title 'Snap crop rectangle to" and on there is also "Layer Opaque"

You can technically save yourself an extra step if you just start with the crop tool.

If you want to actually make a selection of only the opaque areas and not a rectangle. for that you can just use

Ctrl + A to select all then Ctrl + F to float the selection. Then delete the floating layer. The selection will then be around only the opaque areas of the layer.

Or you can use the Magic Wand tool with a setting of "Opacity" or "All Opaque" to select all of the opaque areas.

And another I think is unique to PSP.
With windowed mode, drag the thumb of the layer with the part you want cropped to an empty part of the workspace and release. PSP automatically crops to remove any excess transparency.
