What am I missing - X8 not creating MPEG4

Hi

OK, brand new user to Videol Studio X8 Pro on Windows Vista box w/6GB RAM, plenty of disk
Following instructions in Quick Start from Users Guide, it just doesn't work.
1) Start, create new project, save
2) From EDIT, create new folder, load .MOV file (983 Mb), click on thumbnail
3) Move trim markers to limit results to last 3 minutes of video
4) Save project
5) Switch to SHARE, observe trimmed video is not visible in player; copy/paste from EDIT to SHARE, observe second clip appears in folder
6) Select MPEG4, set output size, specify file name, specify path. START turns blue.
7) Click START, NOTHING HAPPENS. No messages either.

Explicit render from File menu just gets me a low res .MOV file.

What am I doing wrong ?

2a) I assume that's a new library folder? -- drag thumbnail to top timeline

3) Move trim markers to limit results to last 3 minutes of video
4) Save project
5) Switch to SHARE, observe trimmed video is not visible in player; copy/paste from EDIT to SHARE, observe second clip appears in folder
5 a) Preview screen should show video

6) Select MPEG4, set output size, specify file name, specify path. START turns blue.
6 a) can also use Same as first Clip, tick box to change from Same as Project settings

7) Click START, NOTHING HAPPENS. No messages either.
7a) also choose a save location, Start should start to render

Explicit render from File menu just gets me a low res .MOV file.

What am I doing wrong ?

Videos MUST b e in the timeline for any thing to happen to them
