Cannot import mp4/quicktime video

Post by mbusselberg »

Hello,
I have been using Video Studio in a while and I have run into an issue like this before. But I have been able to resolve it in the past. I am unable to drag and drop an mp4 video onto the video track. I have tried renaming the file, and even renaming the extension to mov as was suggested in another post. Renaming the extension allows me to drag and drop but while I can play the video for a short time, shows up as only being an audio track and soon splits into a white and black strip (white on top). I cannot edit the video at all and after a few clicks I cannot do anything. I purchased this within the last year and I am going to be really irritated if I have to upgrade again (after 2 upgrades) in order to use the most recent video because Corel doesn't upkeep its products. That has happened before and I will not do it again. I will simply move to another company. FYI the file was created back in 2013 so this isn't an issue of new technology. I have the latest version of Quicktime installed.

I have run Media info and this is what it comes back with:
1 video stream:AVC
1 audio stream:AAC
2: System Core/System Core
Overall bit rate mode: Variable
Overall bit rate: 3,129 Kbps
Writing Library: Apple Quicktime
First video stream: 2998 Kbps 852*480 at 29.97 fps AVC(NTSC)(Baseline@L3.1)(2 Ref Frames)
First audio stream: 128 Kbps 48.0 KHz, 2 channels, AAC (LC)

I doubt very much that VS is the source of your problem. BTW, you never mentioned what VS version you are using. Renaming a mp4 file to a mov will also not solve your problem.
Where did you get the video?

I think the problem is caused because the frame size of the video is rather unusual at 852 x 480. Video Studio would be looking for a more standard size like 720 x 480 or if it is high definition 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080... Where did the video come from?

The only thing I can suggest is to convert it using a third party video converter to a standard frame size -- though this could alter the size of what would appear in the frame which would eventually be shown on screen. But whatever the case, Video Studio would only output using a standard frame size even if you succeed in opening the clip in it.

I am using VS X7. Yeah... I think you are right about the size thing. That is pretty obnoxious though. Why does it care? Would the "batch convert" option help? Or does that expect a standard size as well? I like creating my own music videos using video footage I find online. That is what I am trying to do.

I think you are correct. But why? If this is a studio where I can create videos why should it matter? After all, overlays can be any resolution. I am trying to make some personal music videos using random clips from the internet. Will the batch converter in VS X7 convert it? Or will that not recognize videos of a non-standard format either? If not, is there any converter that is free? I am not doing this for any kind of commercial reason.

Hi

The frame size is half HD, it is using an aspect ratio of 16:9, well as near as.

Are you able to upload a sample to Google Drive or Windows Microsoft OneDrive.

That way we can try on our pc’s.

There have been some problems with some types of MP4, Corel did provide a fix, providing a DLL to replace the originals.

I have problems downloading the fix, searching the Corel Knowledge base for GH3 mov
http://howto.corel.com/en/corel?family= ... =GH3%20mov

Unfortunately that’s as far as I get.

I have provided the files on my One Drive, there were a series of fixes from Corel-- try using the “Latest Mov Fixes”

http://1drv.ms/1GIciAD

I don’t know if this will fix your issue but worth a try.
The attached word doc gives details of the fix, I think?

That fix helped (thanks) but it still doesn't import. Now it attempts to import instead of just giving me a no (not) sign, and gets to about 98% through a progress bar before the entire program locks up. I have had this issue on a couple of other videos as well and some I was able to fix them with a utility which I no longer have (or can find). The file is too large to upload and if I am going to download a utility to shorten them, I might as well just get one that converts it. Is Corel limited in what aspect ratios it can import as suggested earlier?

EDIT: I just tried another video with the same aspect ratio. It works now so perhaps the original one has been corrupted. I will just re-download it.

Hi

Given that other files with the same frame size has opened ok I would suspect a corrupt download.

But there are many different formats and variations that the video editors tend to play catch-up.. a lot of video types are playable but not easily edited, that’s just the nature of the beast.

Ok. So I have removed and reinstalled everything and redownloaded the video and found more videos with the same problem. So it is not an issue of a bad file. The GH3/4 update allows me to drag and drop but then Corel VideoStudio locks up. Now if I use the task manager to close the program and start it again it also me that it cannot find a video when I reload Video Studio (same behavior it happens if you move or delete a video). However the name of the video is VS and some number. So apparently the program is making a copy/converting or something to a temporary file when it locks up. I am going to see if letting it sit for 5-10 minutes makes a difference under the assumption that perhaps it is just taking its time. But the progress does stop at around 98% and just hangs. I will update this post with the results.

UPDATE: Nope. That didn't make a difference. After 10 minutes it was still locked up. And this time when I restarted it didn't say anything about a missing video.

Hi

You do seem to be having a few issues here….
First the clips you see on the timeline and library are virtual clips, thumbnails representing the files on the hard drive.
Right click a clip and find on Computer will open the saving folder.

If you move or delete files on the computer then the program looses them and requests a re-link. The thumbnails show as black and white until re-linked.

If you see a clip as black and white yet does not request a re-link when selecting it then that is a different problem?

There are lots of different types of Mov / MP4 video files, some cause problems for the video editors and using a Video Converter to create a more editable file may be the only way to fix those types.

Are you able to upload a sample or two to DropBox, Goodle Drive or Microsoft One Drive
We can then try your files on our pc’s to see if we can replicate the problems?
