Re: X8 SP1 wobbly
Trevor/Ken/Brian,
Like others, I tried the normal download updates route - nothing there.
Did what Brian did and used the help/check for updates route - nothing there.
There was the update at the page Trevor linked to - and I noted that the date of the sp1 file on that page was 10 June. So it's been available for a while - no excuses re no time etc are reasonable.
And I did find the auto=downloaded file in the Corel download folder - see the screen shot of tree. Copied it to my normal downloads and ran it, and then checked the about item in help: it showed 18.1..... Why create your own special, unannounced, irrationally numbered and hard to find downloads folder when there is one provide by the OS that the browsers default to and essentially everything else downloaded is stored there, is making work for the sake of it.
Curiouser and curiouser. Corel has never screwed up like this before.
Maybe a heads-up to Yvonne from the moderators?

Re: X8 SP1 wobbly
I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium. I had VS8 do a search for update and it found it. When I got the notice that I needed to close VS to do the update, I did so but, as far as I could tell, nothing happened with the update. Apparently, it doesn't update, it just downloads the file to your computer and puts it in the folder mentioned earlier. I ran that file as Admin and it updated VS with no issue.

Re: X8 SP1 wobbly
I have installed the SP1 yesterday. It was painless, Corel needs to be closed after the second pop-up window appears (the actual downloader/installer). To force the update download, while inside Corel VideoStudio, click on "Help" and then on "Check for updates..."
The actual update it was surprisingly short, just 18MB, hardly a Service Pack. For example the previous Boris Graffiti "patch" was 283MB.
The reported version is 18.1.0.9. I saw some quick reference to QuickTime, so to check that,I tried to render a project with it (MOV file). Well, it locked up the program...

Re: X8 SP1 wobbly
Which version of QT do you have installed -- the latest? I have installed the SP and have the current version of QT installed as well. Just ran a quick test in X8 and had no trouble producing a .mov file using clips in another format.

Re: X8 SP1 wobbly
Hi all,
Even more curious . . . I've just re-checked for X8 on the patches and updates pages - the ones via the Corel page support tab, and also the ones via the Corel page products tab (this is the one that Trevor linked to in his reply to my original post on this topic) - and there's no mention of X8 SP1 on either of them now. I saw the one Trevor mentioned the day of his post, and downloaded it, so that item has definitely been pulled. The date on the update file I got was 10 June, but it did not even surface in the product until 10 days later. Given the responses above, Trevor may have been the only one of us that even knew it was there prior to my first post. In user accessibility terms, it comes and it goes, and there seem to be side effects - like the one mentioned where access to the update page was denied.
This has all the earmarks of a rushed development update cycle - tests passing but incomplete, target date reached: update posted; further tests fail, update pulled or at least access denied, and webadmin not keeping up. I saw this happen with Microsoft updates several times in past years (last one that happened to me was Dec 14) and on the web user opinions on the company and product as a result were'nt pretty.
I have some students with X8, but I am certainly not going to recommend or even mention to them an SP1 update until Corel can get its house in order and some stability in this space.
Have the board moderators even mentioned this debacle to Yvonne - the Corel product contact - yet? If so, what did she say? (debacle might seem a strong description, but it's how I see it. A reliable update path is something one expects to be available from professional commercial product).

Re: X8 SP1 wobbly
I did in fact contact Yvonne, but have only just now received her reply, as follows:
I pointed her to this thread, noting some of the anomalies that have arisen, but she did not address these, sadly... But at least we now have a list of what the SP is supposed to fix...Yes, we have released it via product update first as it is faster.
The web update would be available later since it takes some time for localization.
The product update can be prompted automatically in 3rd launch of that day or by clicking “Check for update”.
The updates in this patch:
● Fix the program launch error while the Hard Disk space is over 3TB
● Improve the MPEG-4 compatibility
● Fix the Facebook and Vimeo uploading error
● Fix “Out of memory” error while enabling right to left typing and paste texts
● Fix the crash error when there are unlinked clips and trying to burn DVD or Blu-ray disc
● Fix the error while resetting the media library, some filters are lost
● Fix the relink error while TimeLapse speed is lower than 100%
● Fix the rendering error with "File Format Mismatch” message
● Fix the playback error with MOV projects

unfortunately this
- Fix “Out of memory” error while enabling right to left typing and paste texts
is not fully fixed, if you Enter (CR) right after CTL-V you being "poped"

It seems that for me the offending process is "qtBridge32.exe" with description "BurnStarR DLL". It happens at around 21% rendering with the 1080p30 profile. If I force close that process, then Corel regains control (but did not render the MOV).

Re: X8 SP1 wobbly
The BurnStar.dll problem was reported last year in this thread: http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... LL#p292674 But unfortunately a solution does not appear to have been found... Apart from yourself and those users in that thread, no one else appears to have reported a similar problem...
The only things I can think to suggest would be to run a registry cleaner and to reinstall QuickTime...

Well... I am not usually producing in .mov format, so it is not that important. I just wanted to report it.

Re: X8 SP1 wobbly
Still no X8 SP1 on the website . . in either of the 2 connections to patches: via the products tab, or via the support tab. Its been 3 weeks since Yvonne's advisory, after which the SP in the product channel was pulled. It never was in the support channel. And periodically since then, I've been checking on its availability because I have a student roaming the world with this software and she keeps in touch, wants the update when available.
For those few of us who noted Trevor's remarks in early June about how to get it, downloaded and installed SP1 whilst it was there, it's been 6 weeks since the SP1 files dated 10Jun were 1st posted on the product channel. More than enough time to "localise" (Yvonne's comment) and post an update via the support channel: if a webmaster can do this (anywhere!) in less than 30 minutes given the files, I can only assume that there is something more amiss here than due process.
Noting Yvonne's remarks re updates via the "check for updates" item in the help menu, I tried that. All it says is "no updates are available". Given that SP1 is installed on the platform asking the question, I'm not sure whether this means no new updates (SP1 is latest, installed) or that the check for updates ran into the same brick wall that obvious to anyone checking via the corel site, and is advising that no updates have been published. Which we know is rodent droppings.
Corel is really dropping the ball on this one.
