Layer visible in palette but not in actual layer, itself

Post by Hideto »

I've got a weird problem that has happened to me before, rarely, and I'm tired of having to start over. I want to know if this can be fixed or not, or even what's going on/why it's happening.

I'll open a PSP file I made for myself at an earlier time or open a file I made in Photoshop format from some other art program and the layers will be there and if I run my mouse over them, they show up in the palette, just they aren't visible at all in the actual image editing window. I made a screenshot example of what's happening, below. I run my black arrow cursor over the Layer 1 layer in the layers palette and see the thumbnail preview of what's in that layer. It shows up exactly as it should, as a black, round-cornered square. However, as you see in the window where the red ? is, there's nothing visible. I'll click on the fill icon, choose red, click in the center of that image window, see no change, but when I run my cursor back over the Layer 1 in the layers palette, it now shows my rounded square as being red, like it should.

What the heck is going on and how do I fix this? I'll provide the "corrupt" file that's doing this so you can see for yourself what's going on and maybe play with it to help me fix it. How can it be visible as a layer thumbnail but not as the windowed image, itself?

I can verify Hideto's problem. The file shows as invisible in X4, X7 .
It shows all OK in CS2 and Serifs Photo Plus X6 and as well the image will show flattened in Irfanview.
There appears to have been some application done in Photoshop that cannot be reproduced in PSP and so it does not display any of the images.
I was able to dissect the file using Photoshop and save each of its separate layes as psd files (maintained transparency but could also have used png).
I could then load those into PSP and reassemble the layer stack . This is a long way to go around toe get this .
I could not copy and paste as a new image in PSP without also carrying over the non showing of the image.

Considering that Photoshop will not read psp files but PSP can read some psd files we have the better.

The problem lies in the blend range options. Double click on the layer, go to Blend Ranges tab in the layers properties dialog. Select the clue channel and, this is the tricky part, move the arrows back where they need to be.

00 on the left and 255-255 on the right. So move the bottom triangles first, then move the top triangles. You'll need to do this for both the "This Layer" and the "Underlying Layer" options.

You can also just have someone with a copy of Photoshop save these back out as PSD files. They'll update with the correct information. That's how I tracked down the problem. When I saved from Photoshop and opened the new PSD file in PSP the error was gone. So I did a thorough look, later versions of PSP use symbols to tell you what kinds of effects are being used on the layers and I saw that the layers were using blend ranges. So odd that it's that one specific channel though.

Faster way is to double click the layer thumb and in the Layer Properties dialog bog just hit the reset to default button on the right. Do this for each of the layers.
