Re: Opening vob files in VS x8 Ultimate
Can you play the the Video_TS.ifo file with a software player such as VLC or WMP? If not then then there is something wrong with the Video_TS folder creation.
Another test you could do is to create a simple project (only a minute or so) and burn it to a Video_TS folder. Then try to import that Video_TS folder into VS X8

Hi
Just making sure?
I noticed from the last image that the files extensions are not showing, that means you have “Hide Extensions of known file types” set in the Tools – View folder options.
That makes it difficult to re-name the Vob files
You should see VTS_01_1.VOB as the files name, indecently you have 5 of those
Rename to VTS_01_1.MPG to VTS_01_5.MPG
Otherwise are you able to upload the last Vob (VTS_01_5.vob) that should be the smaller of the 5 vobs available.
Try Microsoft One Drive (https://onedrive.live.com/)
or Google Drive
I must admit that not all Vobs allow us to rename them, no idea why?
But as mentioned in earlier replies there are free software that will rip Vobs to Mpg

Trevor - many thanks for the Spot that the Hide Extension setting was ticked for folders! Have unticked and now I can successfully change the suffix to MPG 9from VOB) and the software now accepts the renamed files without demur!!
Have a large Brownie Point!!

I don't understand what you mean by the above. Why would you rename "VTS_01_1.MPG to VTS_01_5.MPG"?lata wrote:

Hi
What I meant to say is rename VTS_01_1.VOB to VTS_01_1.MPG
Then repeat for the other Vob files 2 to 5

Re: Opening vob files in VS x8 Ultimate
I am experiencing exactly the same problem with Video Studio X8 and cannot import DVD movies from a +RW disc. The Disk contains three amateur movies recorded onto a DVD recorder. I get the error message there is no valid content. I have also imported the entire contents of the DVD (Video_RM + Video_TS) to my hard drive and get the same error. I have also renamed the two VOB files to mpg and can only import the first movie and cannot access the other two.
I can import all three movies using another video editing software. The three movies play fine on Windows media player. There is something about the DVD+RW file structure that VideoStudio can't recognize. I know I can extract the movies using another editor but I would prefer to do all my work with VideoStudio to improve the quality of the final edit.
Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.
Kind Regards
Chris

Have you checked that Hide File Extensions is not checked - see Iata's post yesterday? It was the problem I had in renaming VOB files.

Re: Opening vob files in VS x8 Ultimate
Thanks John. VideoStudio cannot import the VOB files at all from the Video_TS folder. The option to hide file extensions for known file types is not checked. If I rename the two VOB files to .mpg I can actually import both of them into Video Studio. The problem is that I can only see the first video. The other two videos are missing. The two VOB files are about 1.73 Gbt and contain three videos of about 550 Mbt each. Windows media player and also another video editing programme can see the three movies. For some reason VideoStudio can only see one movie when the VOB files are renamed to MPG.
When I right click the file VTS_01_1 under properties it shows a length of 20 minutes. The VTS_01_2 file shows a length of about 12 minutes. This appears to be the problem. The combined VOB files have three movies of about 30 minutes each or a total of 90 minutes. This incorrect information seems to be confusing VideoStudio.
Kind Regards
Chris

Re: Opening vob files in VS x8 Ultimate
Hi Guys
Vob files have a limit if 1 Gb each, A DVD holds 4.3 Gb of data, that is 4 vobs at 1 Gb with the last Vob taking up the remainder using approx. 300Mb.
The data rate used to create the files controls the quality and files size. A lower data rate will create smaller files below 4.3 gb in which case you may not have the 4 full vobs + the 5th.
Chris, from the figures you have given…
If you have two vobs with a total size of 1.7 Gb then the first is 1 Gb the second will be 700Mb, that is extremely low data rate if the total length is 90 minutes.
At 90 minutes the disc should be full using all 4.3 Gb, with a data rate of approx 6000kbps, your 1.7 Gb files must be using a lower rate approx 35000kbps.
Please view the image provided by canuck on 22nd which shows a full DVD having 5 Vob files.
If you are using a DVD recorder make sure your discs are “finalised” before removing from the recorder. However my recorder automatically finalised RW types when ejecting.

Re: Opening vob files in VS x8 Ultimate
Thanks for this information Trevor. The video data rate is 2456 Kbps (total 2648 with audio) 25 fps pal 720x576. This is long play for a 4 hour DVD disk. The problem is that Video Studio can only read the first movie and not the other two. Other software and players can read the three movies on the +RW or the hard drive.
Kind Regards

Hi Chris
Can you take a screen shot of the Video _ TS folder so we can see the actual files.
If using Windows Explorer you should be able to re-name all Vobs, are you saying there are only two? That seems strange?
After re-naming the two vobs, play with Windows Media are all the movies there?

Re: Opening vob files in VS x8 Ultimate
Trevor, here is the Video_TS folder screenshot. I have no trouble renaming the .VOB files to .MPG. I can import both files into VideoStudio. The problem is only the first 30 min movie can be read. Similarly if I play the renamed VOB/MPG files with Windows Media Player VTS_01_1.mpg plays the first 20 minutes of the first movie and VTS_01_2 plays the last 10 minutes of the first movie. The other two movies have disappeared. All three movies can be opened by Windows Media Player by opening the root menu of the DVD in the drive or by opening the Video TS folder copied to the hard drive (screenshot of the DVD root menu attached). I can also play all three movies with VLC player.
I suspect that VTS_01_1.VOB contains parts of 2 or 3 movies. Similarly VTS_01_2.vob must contain the other parts. Just renaming .VOB to .mpg only reveals title 1 and titles 2 and 3 are lost. I am hoping there is a way to get VideoStudio to read the VOB files to reveal all the 3 titles. It seems there is a problem reading the codices. I did try using a VOB to MP4 converter. VTS_01_1.VOB converted to movie 1 and the beginning of movie 2. VTS_01_2.vob converted to the second half of movie 2 and all of movie 3. So all 3 movies are in there but VideoStudio can't import them.
Kind Regards
Chris

Re: Opening vob files in VS x8 Ultimate
Hi Chris
Clearly there is a problem with the TS-Video folder content and not just a Video Studio problem.
As I mentioned I would expect 5 vobs for that 90 minute video.
If vobs 1 -4 at 1 Gb were 20 minutes each, that would be 80 minutes, with the final Vob taking up the remainder
There is a program called DVD Shrink, that as far as I know will rip any DVD.
It’s a while since I installed that program, but may contain some malware (cannot remember) , although if installed is easy to remove.
http://www.dvdshrink.info/
If you can upload the TS-Folder to a sharing site, maybe Google Drive or One Drive we can try for you.
However if Windows Explorer is struggling reading these files that may not work?
