X8 Bluray creation gives AWFUL video noise but DVD is OK??

Post by johnat31 »

OK I give up.

Before I'd always managed to play around and get things to work but I now need to call up re-enforcements so that I can create BD disks that can be watched.

I've no idea whether I'm giving the right information so please bear with me (Newbie alert) and rather than pile a whole load of "stuff" into this topic I'll start off simple (just like me). OK, here we go:

As picture quality in general has increased so I've decided to use Blu-ray for my storage/presentation. I've been able to create DVDs before but in using X8 and the BD plugin I've got nothing but noise on the TV.

I have a Panasonic SD90 and have transferred the files OK (MTS, 1920x1080 and 25fps). I've run through the edit process and created a Bluray BD-RE but when I play it it gives me a lot of video noise on the screen. I've chopped down the project (a holiday, originally 1hr 45min) to 3 mins and created a DVD and that displays fine on the Sony Blu-ray player.

I started off the project with a JPG (in this case 248x203, crap I know but it was the only map I could find online), followed by another JPG of 1920x1080.

Then I go into the video stuff (PAL, 1920x1080, 16:9, H.264 video, Upper Field First) and finish it off with a load of pictures).

I created the BD-RE disk without error and checked it by playing it on the PC. All looked great for 20 seconds (the JPGs) but it then went mega wrong when showing video on the BD Player.

As soon as I hit the video section is gets pixelated/noisy all over the screen but the audio is fine. There are later sections of the video where it starts out OK for a couple of seconds and then goes pixelated/noisy.

I am totally confused and lost as to what to do and other than checking a couple of previous topics on GoPro settings I've changed nothing.

The project properties are as standard; Blu-ray, 1920x1080, 50i, 20Mbps. Smart Proxy is enabled. I still have the tick in the box for compliant MPEG files.

I've no idea what else I can give you but if someone knows what I need to do in order to complete what I'm guessing is a very simple process I'd be more than happy to take suggestions.

Did you compile your project in the editing module (i.e. put the jpegs and video in the timeline) and then go straight to Share > Create Blu-Ray disc? (I suspect you did...) Or did you first render the project in the the editing module to Share > AVC/H.264 (accepting the default settings)? If you did that, you could first play back the new file to see if there is any noise/pixelation. If there isn't, you could then go to Share > Blu-Ray and when the burning module opens, insert the new file, build a menu and burn and you should not get the noise. But to avoid wasting a disc, you could first create either a BD folder or ISO and play that back on a player like VLC Player to make sure there is no noise before actually burning to a disc.

Wow Ken what a quick reply!

You're right, I did put everything in "Edit" and then straight to "Share" as I thought that was the logical way to progress, 1-2-3.

It takes a long while to create the disc but I'll give it a go over the weekend and see what happens.

I seem to remember that playing the BD-RE using VLC everything looked fine but it was more of a quick check before putting it in the BD player.

To save turning blank BDs into coasters I bought the re-writeable BD disk (Verbatim) and was planning to use it until I got a clean run on the BD/TV.

Thanks for your help and I'll see what happens using your method.

Hi john

Just to add it may also be the settings you are using that are causing some quality issues,
It is best to match the project properties to your video properties, assuming that is possible?

Try this….

1 / Go to Settings – preferences tick Show messages when inserting first video..
2 / Start a new project
3 / Add one of your video clips to the timeline, you should see a pop-up window asking you to match your project properties.
Choose details to view the right hand panel, these are your video files properties.
Please copy and paste those details to your post.
4 / Choose yes to set the properties and return to the timelines.
5 / complete the editing.
6 / now create a video file of your project Share – same as project settings (top option – tick box to make available.)
That should create a compliant BD video file. Play that file to check quality

7/ to burn a disc – start a new project – nothing in the timelines – Share create disc BD the burner module opens, Add Video top left icon, add your video file created above.

8 / make sure Do not convert Compliant is checked
9 / set the navigation preferences
10 / burn the disc.

Oh

Images should be a minimum of 1920 x 1080, even so showing maps and zooming in may not display the best quality.

Just to set your mind at rest, our recommended workflow will not take more time. Yes, converting the project to a video file first will take time. But the project will have to be converted some time, and your workflow means that the conversion would take place during the burning process, which is already a complicated enough process. While it should work, quite a few people have found it either doesn't work at all or gives poor results such as you have had. So separating out the processes as we suggest often rectifies the problem(s)... and takes around the same time.

Just to clarify lata's comment about making sure 'Do not convert compliant is checked', you'll find that in the Options cogwheel icon in the bottom left of the burning screen. It is ticked by default but sometimes users may have played around with it and left it unticked. You have made a compliant video file under our workflow in the editing module. If that box is not ticked it will be converted once again during the burning process using the Properties shown in the bigger window above that box, and you don't want that.

Hi

I forgot the last line

11/ after pressing Burn the process starts with Convert Menu.
If Convert Title shows then the files are being rendered again, As Ken says “ and you don’t want that”
