VideoStudio X8 Crashes when moving audio clip

Post by lsnyman »

I Have VS X8 Ultimate and have a problem with voiceover clips. When i am dragging them around the timeline to sync with certain parts of my video, the program will crash. After some testing i find it happens when one audio clip overlaps another. Is there a way to stop the overlap from happening?
It is hard to control becayse i may be dragging the beginning of a clip to the right but unseen further in the timeline it is overlapping another clip, then the program crashes.

Any help appreciated.

Have you enabled ripple editing for that audio track? It is indicated by the tiny padlock icon to the left of the track. Ripple editing means that when you insert or move something in the timeline, the other clips in the track will move to the right to accommodate it.

Mind you, I don't think anyone else has reported this, and I find it difficult to think that merely overlapping sound files causes a crash. Is it only with voiceovers or can you also make the program crash by overlapping inserted music? If not, how did you make the voiceovers and in what format?

Hi Ken
It is any track, as long as its an audio file. I made mine by recording directly in VSX8 and it it is .WAV or.MP4. However I can grap any of the sample audio files and in a blank project, drag them to the Voice. music or even the video line, if I overlap them the program crashes. Video attached

Hmmm... I can't think what the problem might be. I just created a new project in X8 with a few random video clips in the timeline then added random .mpa clips from the VS library to the music track, then overlapped them with no trouble. When I tried adding a .wav file, however, and tried to overlap that with one of the mpa files, it would not allow the overlap at all. But the program did not crash. I deleted that short mpa file, and the wav file would then overlap the preceding mpa file, so I am not sure why that shorter mpa file would not allow an overlap.

To deepen the mystery, I then added an mp3 clip to the same track, and that one would overlap with the .wav clip -- again no crash. And the mp3 file would also overlap the other mpa files, again with no crash.

Hi

Are all computers running W8.1?

Why are you dragging the sample video files to the voice track?
I would have thought using audio files would be best.

I did try using the video samples as your YT shows, but like Ken no problems and no crashes? Although running windows 7

I'm seeing the exact same problem. Have uploaded a video demonstrating the issue.

Will report it via Corel's support.

I tried duplicating the problem but like Ken and Trevor I have no problem with overlapping the clips. I tried both on W7 and W8.1

Not unusual for software of this complexity, and it seems likely that it's environmental. Will see what support say, and I might have a little dig around myself to see what I can figure out.

Does it happen with all audio clips or just certain ones?

It happens with any audio clip I've tried, and in fact also happens with video clips and titles as well. Essentially, if I try to drag anything on top of (or overlapping) anything else in the timeline the application dies.

The crash dump indicates that it might be an OLE drag'n'drop issue. Currently waiting for Corel support to do their analysis of the various logs, dump-files and system info that I've sent them.

Together with a number of other crashes I've seen, it is making it almost impossible to actually use this application to edit video :(

I have the same problem. The only way I can reallyget it to work is to add them sequentially from the beginning. Any moving of them across the timeline results in a crash. Any video editing in videosrudio is fine as well as the rest of the functionality. Has anyone found a fix to this audio bug? I'm using windows 7 and videostudio 8 ultimate that has been fully patched and up to date.

Not 100% sure what fixed it in the end; it was some combination of:
  • Uninstalling and re-installing VSX8.
  • Upgrading to VideoStudio X8.5 (SP2).
  • Installing the latest K-Lite Codec pack (avoiding the crapware by de-selecting it in the installer).
  • Enabling hardware acceleration in VSX8.
I should note that my issue wasn't just audio clips (as described in my previous post), and it only occurred when clips were dragged over one another, not when moving them around generally. Also be aware that at the time I checked, the 8.5 update was not offered via the software's built-in updater; I had to manually download it from Corel.

This solution should works. I had this problem, and reinstall, upgrading, and latest codec pack solved it. Finally VS works without any problem!;)
