VideoStudio X8 crashes on m2ts files but not mp4
I have been using VSX7 for several years and last week I bought a new computer so decided to upgrade to VSX8. On my old computer I have been editing m2ts video from a Sony camcorder and mp4 from a GoPro without problems. VideoStudio X8 crashes immediately when I try to bring in an m2ts file but works fine for mp4 files. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that doesn't help. Just for grins, I tried installing VSX8 on the old computer and the projects that worked fine on that machine in VSX7 did the same thing. The new computer has plenty of resources, (its a Dell Precision M6800) so that can't be the issue. While I am waiting to hear from Corel support, I thought I would post here to see if anyone else has had such issues. I'm kinda disappointed in Corel.

Re: VideoStudio X8 crashes on m2ts files but not mp4
Well I use both .m2ts and HD mp4 files all the time, including mp4 files from my GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition. No problems at all in X8. What I find curious about your problem is that the GoPro video uses the .mp4 extension but is produced using the same codec as the .m2ts footage, namely H.264. Have you tried changing the m2ts extension to mp4 (not that that should be needed)... Also, have you by any chance installed the sofware which would have come with the Sony? That would at least ensure you would have any tweaks on Sony's version of m2ts (which I imagine would show as mts in the camcorder itself).
Can you also confirm that you have the full version of X8 and not the trial version. Corel has made the trial version extremely limited and only capable of using codecs installed as part of Windows, rather than commercial codecs which would otherwise be installed as part of VS...

Re: VideoStudio X8 crashes on m2ts files but not mp4
Thanks for the response, Ken. I tried renaming a file with an mp4 extension but that doesn't work. I was a little confused when I wrote my op (after hours of frustration) and the projects actually DO work using VSX8 on the old computer (an Asus, also with an I7 processor). Also, the camera is a Panasonic (my old one was Sony) and I do have the Panasonic software installed. The download definitely was the full version (I paid Corel's minion Cleaverbridge for it). The files will work with other programs like MS MovieMaker, Windows Media Player, etc. This all makes it even more confusing, in that it seems to be something peculiar to combination of Corel and the Dell. Meanwhile, nothing else from Corel support after their initial request for system info last Friday afternoon. I'm just glad this is my personal stuff and I don't have clients waiting for the projects.

Re: VideoStudio X8 crashes on m2ts files but not mp4
Hi
How did you transfer the video files from the camera to the pc.?
Panasonic provides software (HD Writer) to do that or you can simply copy and paste from the SD card.
Try both options, one creates M2ts the other MTS, it should not make a difference but worth a try.

Re: VideoStudio X8 crashes on m2ts files but not mp4
Thanks, Trevor. I just tried that but still no luck. Either way it still crashes. It is interesting that when the files are copied directly from the SD card, they show up as ACVHD files but when transferred using the Panasonic software they are m2ts. This is more than I ever wanted to know about file types. I just want to edit my videos!

I also have Panasonic, and I never use it's un-needed app to transfer files, nor I use VS for that. I just drag the files with files explorer and import them to VSX8

Re: VideoStudio X8 crashes on m2ts files but not mp4
... And just to be clear, the .m2ts files *are* AVCHD, as are .mts files and some (but not all) .mp4 files (if they were produced using the H.264 codec). The only real difference between them is the extension used. Indeed, some cameras these days are producing .mov files which on closer inspection are also AVCHD...

Re: VideoStudio X8 crashes on m2ts files but not mp4
A week after my initial request to Corel tech support, here's the response:
"After further reviewing your case, it was found that the issue you submitted is already known to us and has been reported to our Engineering department for review and action. This case will be elevated to the Engineering team to have action against it."
It took a week to determine that the problem was already known to them?!
And here's the message from the Engineering team:
"Thanks for letting us know about this issue. Our engineering department is assessing it to determine whether it is a valid product defect. This process can take some time. When the issue has been addressed, we will send you additional information by email. "
"A valid product defect!? " The product doesn't work! Grrrr!
So, today I started uninstalling software just to see if anything might be conflicting with VS8 and I found the disc of VS4 so just for fun I installed it. Amazingly, m2ts files do not crash it! Unfortunately, the VSP files I created with version 7 can't be opened by VS4. The fun continues but I don't seem to be any closer to a solution.

Re: VideoStudio X8 crashes on m2ts files but not mp4
Hi
Well I was unaware of any problems crashing VS using m2ts files, surprised at hearing that, although Corel do not keep us up to date with problems or fixes.
You can save VSP’s made with X7 to open with two earlier versions that gets you to X5.
Open with X5 and effectively you can save back to X3 / X4.
The problem may be the more complicated edits used in X7 not being available in X4, different versions of filters etc.
If you zip a VSP attach to your post we can try re-saving back to X4.
We cannot view the files and receive a re-link request, but saving seems to work.
And if you can upload a Sony video sample to maybe Microsoft one Drive we can try on our pc’s.
I wonder if it’s a Windows 8 issue, or have you updated to 8.1?
As you see I am running W7

Re: VideoStudio X8 crashes on m2ts files but not mp4
Hi Trevor,
Yes, I am running Windows 8.1 on both the new Dell laptop ( which VS8 crashes on) and my Asus desktop ( which VS 8 runs nicely on). Very preplexing. I can finish the projects I am in the midst of on the Asus, but of course the reason I bought VS 8 was to have the new features it offers and so that I could edit videos on the laptop while I am traveling. My copy of VS 7 was downloaded several years ago, so I don't have a disc of it to try loading on the new Dell laptop to see if that will work. I guess if VS7 did work on they Dell, I would just use it and try to get my money back form Corel.

Hi
Have you tried running the program as administrator, right click the VS icon and choose Run as Admin, (just clutching at straws)
I had a lot of trouble using a new Lenovo lap top, problem was the graphics card drivers. Installing drivers from Windows Optional Updates fixed that, but who would think of updating a new pc’s graphics. Maybe worth checking.
I assume you don’t have a copy of the X7 downloaded files, you should always save those along with the serial numbers, I usually save them to disc.
By the way the X7 download is called something like VSX7_Ultimate_PF.exe
Again could be the pro, you don’t say which version? Search your pc?
Also try accessing your Corel account, if you are lucky the download link may be still available, long shot.
Contact Corel via facebook to ask if they will provide another download link? You never know…
When you install X7 setup files are extracted to your hard drive, if they remain then you should be able to copy and install from those. Not sure if all bonus and extras will be installed.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X7 Setup Files
You may of course have the Pro version.

Re: VideoStudio X8 crashes on m2ts files but not mp4
Here's a link to one of my clips on Dropbox.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/177 ... 34752.m2ts
I have checked video card the drivers but will try that again. Yeah, you wouldn't think that would be needed on a computer right out of the box.
I have tried running as Admin.
Also, in another thread on this forum, someone reported that VS 8 would not load on their computer and Corel support told them to try the 32 bit version, which did load, so I tried that too. No dice! Talk about grasping at straws.
So now I am wondering about converting the ACVHD files to Mp4. IS it possible to do that without losing quality?

Downloaded your clip from Dropbox, the .m2ts file loads and plays correctly in both VSX7 & VSX8
Clip properties as follows, are you sure the clip is in fact a .m2ts file
