Corel Painter Essentials 4 canvas color

Hi everyone!
When I open Photo Painting (in Painter Essentials 4) and pick, say, Classical Oil Painting, my canvas color, which would previously open to white now opens to dark blue, though the canvas color at the bottom left hand corner of the page indicates white, and when I open the canvas color dialogue box, white is highlighted. I have tried in vain to change the canvas color, and now must use the background filler feature to change the canvas color back to white before I can paint anything. Also, after the painting is done, when I try to use the "restore detail" feature, as soon as I click on the canvas I lose the image completely and revert to the dreaded dark blue screen! Anyone have any idea what is going on?
