upgrading to X8 -- Motion Paths and custom templates

Post by Ilene »

I have a question regarding custom motion paths... I have created libraries of custom paths that I like to use over and over again, and I keep creating new ones to add to these libraries. When I upgraded from VS6-VS7 ( both versions 32bit) -- I was only able to migrate these libraries over to the new version by doing it manually... a cumbersome task, but well worth it! ie... I added clips to my timeline, added a motion path to that clip... saved them all to a project file... opened the project file in the new software and saved each path back into newly created libraries. --- I'm happy to do this again...

My question is.... will all these motion paths that were created in 32bit versions work in 64bit as I plan to install X8 as 64 bit. Any advice on this would be helpful.

Likewise, I created some custom templates? will templates created in x7 32bit be compatible with x8 64bit?

thanks

Hi Ilene

Hmmmmm……nothing is certain

Custom Templates, I assume you are referring to the Instant Projects.
If so yes, they are saved to a common folder and should import automatically to Video Studio.
C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\VSPTemplate

Any projects saved elsewhere on pc can be manually imported to the IP Custom library.

Motion Paths, I don’t know, I would think yes but to be honest have never tried.

Can you create a project using the library samples, add a path and save the project.
Add a few different clips + paths.
Zip the VSP and attach to your post.
We can open the project and try to import the path to our 64 bit version.

Again ---Only use library samples for these projects

Disclaimer

If your Instant Projects contain complicated edits then, maybe not supported by the newer program, then they may be a problem.
Smart Sound is a no no, not used in X8, so any templates using that will have problems.

Hi Ilene

I don’t have a problem with those, I chose Customise Motion and “Save to” that saved the effect as a path shows in the custom library, I assume that's how you do it.

The name we give here is used in the library only
The actual file UserPathStyle.vps is saved in a folder called PathStyle here:-

C:\Users\Trevor\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\17.0\en-US\PathStyle

Note:- this structure is hidden by windows, so either choose to Show Hidden Files and Folders or search for “appdata” from the start button.

The actual folders have strange names and do not give an indication of the path name. example {70A58D41-5FE0-46DC-B8F7-ED66FCD172A5}
Knowing where these are should make it easy to back up and import to video studio, pity Corel don’t give then a more meaningful name?

Please be aware that this folder structure is used to reset the program by deleting 17.0 or renaming to 17.0copy. doing so will lose your paths. I would copy them to a safer location.

That's great news! Thanks so much... It's nice to know where they are hidden but tedious as it may be I feel more comfortable bringing them in manually-- exactly how you described. And yes the naming of them is so odd. I do name them all myself too. i appreciate the help!

I just found a bug while testing your vsp...
A custom path can be saved from within the custom motion menu but ... filters attributes will not be saved.
It looks as there is an option for that but it doesn't work.
I thought it might be a solution to other question was asked recently.

Hi

well not really a bug, the FX filter is not part of the Motion Paths.

We are saving specifically the Motion Paths and not additional edits.

If you wish to save all then the Instant Projects would do that?

Ok. Thanks. Not a bug. I have those filters saved separately. I create a media folder for them within VS and copy the image from my timeline to that folder. I will save the combination together so I remember how to use it again. I will even go as far to label them overlay 1, overlay 2 -- I will see thumbnail and remember how to place them. Corel makes it a cumbersome process but I've made it work. I have so many of these combos saved that its hard to remember --- but as I need it I insert it to the end of the timeline and if I like it i copy the attributes to the current image I'm working with.
The images(s) in the timeline I sent is an example of that. One image has a filter and maybe motion (don't recall) and the image below just has motion.
I think I'm good! Thanks for the thorough check! I guess that wasn't a good example to send you ... Should have all been saved motion paths.

Guys, if it's not a bug than why there is the option to select attributes or not?
We can only hope is an X9 enhancement a programer left a track behind or forgot to add the missing 2 lines of code.

Hi Ilene

The samples were fine, I had noticed the FX filter but chose to ignore it.

I did have problems opening the project in X7, the clips showed but either black or Black and White as though requiring a relink. The program did not ask for that so was in limbo.
My only thought that the VSP was created using 32 Bit program, I am running 64Bit

The project opened ok in X8 so was able to test, so why not X7?
Just repeated the above today, no change there.

Dragging the clip to the library is as good a way of retaining the edits, pity Copy Attributes is not available from the library.

Creating an Instant Project of the image is another way to preserve your edits, but again not straight forward.

As a thought saving Motion Paths should be available after right click, no reason to open the Customise Motion panel to do that?

Asik

The point is we were saving Motion Paths and FX filters are not “motion paths”

There are ways to save the FX filter by adding the effect to the FX favourites.

And if you want to save all edits then the Instant Projects will do that.

Hi Ilene

The project opened but only showed the clips as Black and White, no re-link was available, no errors.
The clips just simply did not display correctly.

I think I would be able to replace clip with another and get it working, a bit of a pain to do with lots of clips.

Yes I am able to repair by replacing the clips with another clip. Drag from library hold CTRL key then drop clip.

Almost certain its a 32 v 64 bit problem?

Would help if other X7 64 bit users were able to try your project?

Maybe you just didn't have that image in your x7 Sample lib but I agree it's weird that it didn't ask you for the relink.
