Resolution 8Mpix stills from a UHD video in VSX8

Post by erdna »

I want extract full res 3840x2160 still from a UHD video on the timelne by using the snapshot feature, just like I do to get a full res 1920x1080 pic fromh fullHD footage. I get the 3840x2160 snapshot, but the resolution is gone, no UHD resolution! To verify this, I used a 3860x2160 jpeg testpic (link hereunder), placed it onto the timeline to get a few ceconds of UHD video. I took a snapshot somewhere after 1 sec.
The resulting pic has 3840 by 2160 pixels but it does not show the sharpness which has the original testpic.

I agree with you erdna, but then the original image is not sharp on the preview screen either, remember that the preview screen will never give you the clarity of the original image placed in the timeline, I think the only way to test properly, is to render the project, then compare

Thanks Robert, but the thing s that i get perfect results (keeping original resolution) when I do exactly the same in fullHD instead of uhd. Just try

Ok, rendered the original image and the snapshot, used MPEG-4AVC 4K (3840x2160,30p,40Mbps) profile, there is considerable degradation of the snapshot

Then rendered the !920x1080 image and snapshot, used MPEG-4 AVC (1920x1080,30p,15Mbps) profile, the only difference that I could see was a slight change in colour, other than that, the original and snapshot are of the same quality

Too bad to hear this, but I have found 4K videos are not handled as well as 1080p ones yet. My camera can create files filmed using 4KPhoto. These files are 8MP photos instead of typical video files where frames use information from prior and following frames. I have yet to bring one of these 4KPhoto files in VS. I am wondering if your files are 4KPhoto by chance (my camera is LUMIX GH4).

Under 100$ can bring you just as much.

not for images, but you don't need to do that, that image already exists.

for video ---- clip mode is available and will use the original video files resolution to create the image.
Project mode will use the project properties frame resolution to create the image.

Even so I do agree that Video Studios handling of still images is poor, the larger the image the worse it seems to get.

$100 can capture 8MP stills at 30 frames per second? What equipment does this? As far as I know there are only a handful of cameras that can do this with the high quality that a GH4 can.

I did some further testing and have to correct my conclusions regarding UHD snapshot quality in VSX8. The basic problem witth the video I made from a UHD jpeg ipic is that quality of the rendered video is very poor in terms of resolution, and so are the resulting snapshots of course. I made a full quality UHD video from the jpeg using another program (see link hereunder), and VSX8 makes perfect snapshots (full UHD resolution) out of it. The problem of not being able to get UHD quality video from a picture that has UHD resolution. That also means that making a slideshow from UHD photo's will result in low quality UHD images.

What was the other program you used to make the good quality UHD video? Cyberlink? Sony? Magix?

Ain't this just life. I bought my 750 in March 2014 and then P bring out a 4K version in 2015. So the question is:- Wait for an 8K version in 2016 (if it arrives) or wait for the 4K versions to reduce in price or stay with my 750 until the 12K version comes out or (and this is likely) the whole video recording scene is turned on its head with a totally new technology. :?:
