Re: program crashing when overlaying images
Windows updates got nothing to do with such mishaps.
I'm running 6 years old XP and VSX8 runs smoothly.

Re: program crashing when overlaying images
Hi - I'm new to the forum but not to VideoStudio - started with x4, then x6 pro and currently (trying!) with x8 ultimate. Posting to this forum because my problem is the same as described by the originator and other repliers and I've googled extensively without finding a solution that worked.
I bought the upgrade to x8 ultimate back in July last year and installed everything with no obvious problems. Then, for any clips that overlay each other the program would immediately crash. Corel support tried to help (suggestions to reload basically) and I did try to get a remote session going with someone from Corel but it never took place (mostly due to timezone issues) and then my free support time ran out. Basically I gave up, wrote off my money as lost - the program never worked because I use transitions and overlay tracks all the time so without this function the program is useless to me.
Back on it today (because I saw an ad for x9 and wondered (hoped!) my problem might have been fixed), have installed all the patches, service packs, and hot fixes, but the original problem still exists. I've looked at all the solutions suggested here and tried them all but none have worked.
I know what the problem is, but I don't know how to fix it. From what I can tell, in Settings, Preferences, Edit - the transition effects has random for the effect to use when you overlay two clips. There are no other options to choose from and the drop down list to pick something to customise the default is completely empty. So as far as the program is concerned, I have no transitions. I assume because it can't find a transition to use when I overlay, the program crashes. In the transitions where you can see all the options, I have a few (not as many as I expected) so there are some transitions available to the program but the program doesn't seem to know they're there (?). Having 'automatically add a transition effect' ticked or not ticked doesn't make a difference. Here's a picture of my settings preferences:

Has anyone else experienced this and fixed it? If so, how? I was thinking of upgrading to x9 but not if this kind of thing will happen again.
To summarise what I tried without success:
- uninstall and reinstall (multiple times)
- uninstall and just install the x8 main exe - program wouldn't load at all
- reinstall the bonus pack as the administrator
- rename 18.0 folder (everywhere I could find one, including roaming/ulead systems/corel videostudio x8) and restart x8
With the last two, on opening x8, after a bit of a wait a small loading bar appeared by itself in the middle of my screen and I watched it cycle through what look like many names for transitions, fx, filters, etc. counting slowly up to about 80% before it just disappeared. Another set of things with names like PAGEV5 then cycled slowly as well. It got to about 60% and then the program crashed. I can start it after this and it loads, with the aforementioned problem with transition preference settings.
I have a digital copy and can no longer re-download my files from my order summary - when I had Corel support involved we did re-download the files and these are the ones I'm using.
I still have x6 Pro installed - didn't want to uninstall it because it could be the only program I end up with and it still works (and I don't think I still have the files needed to reinstall it).
Thanks - any suggestions of new things to try would be much appreciated.

Re: program crashing when overlaying images
Hi ShaViva
Sorry you are having trouble but it does seem a strange problem.
I do not have a problem with Transitions or setting/selecting the random transitions.
My Customise panel is full so it does appear to be your installation that is the problem.
As you have contacted Corel we may go over old ground, but we don’t know exactly what they did?
I can only think the installation is corrupt one way or another.
Can you uninstall the program choosing to remove all personal data
Then re-install as Administrator.
Still a problem….
Now can you try re-setting the program by re-naming the folder 18.0 to 18.0_old
How…….
http://lata.me.uk/corel/reset/reset.htm
Then right click the X8 desktop icon and “Run As Administrator”
I realise you have done this before, but if you have re-named all 18.0 folders you have found, maybe one to many?
Where did you purchase the software, if you check your installation files MB size I can compare the size and details with the version I have.

Hi
What do you see when viewing the “Vfx_plug” folder
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8\Vfx_plug
I see 139 .vfx files

Re: program crashing when overlaying images
Thanks for your reply lata - I knew it was a weird one! When dealing with Corel support they were stumped (they asked me to try a couple of things but tbh I can't recall now exactly what they were, aside from uninstall and reinstall, after re-downloading the files). It's late here so I will try the reloading sequence in the order you suggested tomorrow.
Re the size of the install files I'm using (I purchased direct from the Corel website - digital only), this is what I have:

Inside VS x8 I have 40 transitions visible. I thought in VS x6 I had subgroups to choose from for the type of transition, but here these are the only ones I can see, all grouped together (like the all view in x6):

Re what I see when looking at the vfx_plug folder in the location you gave, I also have 139 .vfx files - all with date modified dates earlier than my first attempt to install x8 (not sure if that's relevant - should the x8 update have modified any of these files?).
Thanks again - I'll post back how my reinstall went once it's done ...

Re: program crashing when overlaying images
Hi
Thanks for the details, the main and Contents are the same although your Bonus is slightly smaller, that’s not to say there is a problem as Corel do tweak the files from time to time.
Forgot to say, can you install only the Main program to see what appears there, and if that works ok install the Contents.
I assume you are installing the 64bit program?
Note ... VS X6 transitions are grouped differently to X8.
X8 has overlay transitions separated from the main timeline transitions.
Overlays I see 40 same as you.
Program fully installed -- Viewing the drop down panel I see this list
Post updated
When you install video studio setup files are saved to here….
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8 Setup Files
Then used to install the program.
You may be best to delete these files before running the installer, a new set of setup files will then be created, just in case the original setup files are corrupt.

Re: program crashing when overlaying images
Thanks for your replies lata.
Just to confirm, I am installing 64 bit programs. In transitions, I only had Overlay transitions – the only other option in the drop down list is My Favourites.
So I tried uninstall/reinstall, following your suggestions. To be detailed (it might help!) I did the following in the order written.
1. Uninstalled VS x8 ultimate – ‘remove personal settings’ selected
2. Uninstalled Corel VS MyDVD
3. Uninstalled apple application support (64-bit) (this came up as an error/issue when installing before so I thought play it safe and get rid of it)
4. Deleted C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8 Setup Files and all files within
5. Deleted C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X8 Setup Files and all files within
6. There are no 18.0 folders in the roaming/ulead systems/corel … folder at this point
7. Install only the main program, as administrator
.... Messages – apple application support most up to date version already installed (even after uninstalling it!)
.... Quick time install box came up – scrolled through loading/checking bar very quickly
.... Remainder of installation bar went very quickly too – didn’t see it at 100%, no pause once it got to 100%
8. Run VS x8 – nothing happens – software doesn’t load. No evidence in task manager that anything is happening
9. Tried running as administrator – still nothing
So I thought, does the program need updating as per http://www.videostudiopro.com/en/suppor ... sion-tab=1
10. Ran service pack 1 update (VSProX8_SP1) (almost instant on the install – less than a second to run)
11. Tried to run x8 – this time I get an error that Corel VS has stopped working
12. Tried to run as administrator – same error message
13. Ran update 8.5(service pack 2) (vsprox85_update)
14. Tried to run x8 – back to nothing happening
15. Ditto for running as administrator
16. Ran x8.5 hotfix (VSX85_HotFix) (very quick again)
17. Tried to run x8 – nothing happening
18. Ditto for running as administrator
19. Ran service pack 3 (VSProX8SP3)
20. Tried to run x8 – nothing happening
21. Ditto for running as administrator
22. Ran hotfix 2 (VSX8_HotFix_2) – instant, so quick there was no install bar at all
23. Program loads! All the transitions are available to choose as the default in preferences, and overlaying tracks does not cause the program to crash!
So at this point my problem is solved but I don't have any of the bonus content. What next? Should I risk loading bonus content? Is there a recommended order? Anything else I should worry about before I attempt?
Thanks again for your help with this - much appreciated and I have made progress!
Cheers

Re: program crashing when overlaying images
Hi
An improvement that’s good
When you install any Video Studio X8 you need to then install the Hotfix (22 in your list) that corrects the windows update issue. The program should now run. Ignore 9 to 21 in your list.
Read this post for info.
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=58892
Once the program is running, maybe on the second or third launch it will eventually do an auto update, installing Service Pack 3, that is the only update that is required, all earlier updates SP1/2 are included in SP3. It should not matter that you have manually installed the packs.
Your version number should now be 18.6.0.6 (Help About)
Ok the program is running ok, check it out and set your preferences.
Check the Corel Guide and Do-More downloads to make sure they work, need to register to get downloads. If you burn DVD discs download the menu packs.
Then install Contents package. Are things still working ok?
If yes install the Bonus package, that will install the ProDad stuff (Ultimate Files)
Check that Boris is available from the FX library, has been an issue, but the Reset renaming 18.0 should sort that.
Good luck

Re: program crashing when overlaying images
Thanks lata for the suggestions and the clarification re what updates I needed to install.
Had some (unexpected) time today so I thought, time to break or not break VS again and followed the order suggested for installing the rest of the program.
AND IT WORKED! I have the extra things (including Boris in FX) and my transitions are all still there - and no more program crash when I overlay.
Thanks so much for talking me through fixing this - I don't know what specifically made the difference but the end result is a positive outcome.
So for anyone else with a similar problem, the order of necessary things I did was
0 - uninstall everything
1 - install the main program
2 - install hotfix 2 (see http://www.videostudiopro.com/en/suppor ... sion-tab=1)
(2b - install service pack 3 - this is where I did it, taking the point that you can check for updates from within the program too)
3 - start program, check transitions are there - set Edit preferences and pick a transition (don't leave it random)
4 - install content
5 - run program, check transitions are still there
6 - install bonus
7 - run program, check transitions again - and hopefully it's success.
Cheers
