program crashing when overlaying images

Post by alistair2802 »

As you will see from the video below, when I overlay one image over another, it crashes the program:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxae3W ... sp=sharing

As you will see I have over 100 images in this VSP file, but it has nothing to do with that, as I've tried it with two single images on a new file and it still crashes.

I have also tried overlapping two text images and it still crashes.

Can anyone help me resolve this?

I tried doing that in VS8 and in both the main and overlay tracks, dragging a photo to overlay another just shortens the duration of the photo in front and adds a fade out fade in effect between the two.

Your program seems like its hanging because it doesn't know what to do.

I just tried an experiment. Go into settings> preferences> edit> Under transition effect, set a default transition. Do not tick the Auto add effect button.

When I drag a photo over another, whatever default transition effect I have set is what gets applied between the two photos.

Doesn't look like there's a "no default effect" option that, to my thinking, might cause a hang because the program doesn't know what to do. Might try changing your default effect anyway and see if it resets something tho.

Hi, and thanks for the response. I think you could well be something here because when I go to the preferences that you mentioned, and try to change default transition effect, it wont let me!

The 'random' effect is currently set as the default, but when I click the drop down to select an alternative it doesn't give me any other options. There is also nothing listed when I click the 'customize' button.

Could this is be the issue? Is it looking fir something that is not there?

hi, I also had a similar problem just last night, only slightly different, I have an moving background on my main video track, and I placed an image file on overlay track 1, on that image file on overlay track 1 there is a black section within the image, in this black section I wanted to have 3 images superimpose one after the other, so I then placed another image file on overlay track 2, which was to overlay onto a black section of image on overlay track 1, I then placed another image on overlay track 2, adjusted both images so they sat nicely in the black box from image file on overlay track 1, all good so far, but the moment I attempted to overlay (superimpose) these 2 images on overlay track 2, the program shuts down, similar to alistair2802. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance. :D

Alistair, That has to be it. That is strange. When I click on the Customize button by Random Effects: all of the programs effects are listed and I have all of them checked.

In your video it looks like you're running VS8, is that right?

You might try the renaming the 18.0 folder to 18.0_old then restart the program, and let it rebuild the folder. I don't know if the effects are a part of that folder but if they are that might fix things.

Go to C: drive> Users> Your Name> App Data> Roaming> Ulead> Corel Video Studio(64)(if your running 64 bit)> 18.0 folder and rename it 18.0_old.

Can you explain exactly what you mean by "attempted to overlay", please. I am a bit confused since you seem to have overlaid them already. But do you mean you then attempted either to play the project to see how it looked, and the program crashed; or did you try to render (Share) the project and it crashed?

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the reply, let me see if I can put on paper what I am trying to do, I am trying to create a 30 sec spot to sell Wagyu Beef from nothing except graphics. Looking at the time line, I have my main video track, and I have selected 4 overlay tracks, and my 1 title track.
On the main video track I place a 30 sec 16x9 moving background.
On overlay track 1, I place a 4x3 graphic which has a black section, I place this to the left of the 16x9 picture leaving the right hand side free for text.
On overlay track 2, I place a graphic of beef (rump) which has a blue background which I chroma key & reduce in size the graphic and place into the black section of the graphic on overlay track 1, I wanted this graphic piece of rump to run 10 sec.
Now on overlay track 2, to the right of the graphic of Beef (Rump) I place a graphic of beef (porterhouse) which has a blue background which I chroma key reduce in size and place into the black section of the graphic on overlay track 1 I wanted this piece to run 10 sec, what I was trying to do was to increase the length of the rump and porterhouse to 12 sec each and have a 4sec fade in / fade out, overlay / superimpose whatever you want to call it, Eg. Porterhouse fades in and into Rump, and Rump fades out, the moment I attempt to overlay the 2 images (Rump and Porterhouse) the program shuts down. When I get home I will upload via my Dropbox the graphics and all files, to try and explain better what I am trying to do, at this time the 2 graphics are side by side (straight cut) and all is fine.
Thanks in advance for your reply

Hi Alistair

Trailryder is correct and you should be seeing the transition options, a lot of them........
What do you see when selecting the Default Transition effect, should also show the full list.

The folder structure is hidden by windows. You should set show Hidden Files and Folders from any open folder Tools - Folder Options - View Tab
Otherwise place "Appdata" in the start search box to find the Roaming folder.

Hi downundermm

Thanks for the samples, a picture paints a thousand words…..

I don’t have a problem with that project, I was able to set crossfade and adjust the durations of the beef images. I little tricky keeping the lengths correct when working with the overlay track
I have attached my version with Crossfades.

But as I say no crashes.

Did you check Preferences (F6) edit Tab for those transition effects as mentioned to Alistair, just in case you have the same problem?

I'm not sure whether we have two different problems going on in this thread, but I'm back with mine! :/

I successfully renamed the folder, as requested.

I reopened VideoStudio. It wouldn't open and came up with an error. I tried again. It opened successfully. :)

I tried to overlay two picture to create a transition again - but it crashed again! :(

I checked the preferences again under the 'edit' tab, but it is still only showing the 'random' effect and the drop down is empty - all as previous :(

Yes Lata, a picture does paint a thousand words, and you just painted a Mansion for me in a couple of strokes, it all makes sense now, I love the length of the transition 4sec perfect and I also love the fact that it crossfades the titles on title track 1 at the same time also, I could mention the words spoken when I noticed that, but this is a family forum. I will be going into my preferences and adjust as suggested. no crashes, no more problem, many thanks for your suggestions and your advise, it has been much appreciated.

Hi Alistair

I don’t really know why you are not seeing those transitions, below are examples of whats missing.

Is your computer upto date as regards Windows updates?

I can only suggest you re-install the program.
Use Programs and Features, choose to remove all personal data when uninstalling.
