Why do I have to press /shift/ & /play/ to play project?

Post by Tealwater26 »

Hi,
I am editing my first video and it was going along ok. I was only a few minutes into the video when I tried to play my project (not at the beginning) and it jumped to the beginning and would not play. A prompt came up and said to press /shift/ and /play/ to play the project. When I do that, it plays fine, but it's annoying to have to do every time. I forget and it jumps to the beginning which is also annoying.

Does anyone know why this is happening and also can it be fixed?

Thank you!

Just click on the location desired in the time line to set the cursor position and then hit play.

Have you (inadvertently) set Project In and Out points? A Blue line above the top timeline track? The Play button only plays between an in and out both in Clip and Project mode, unless you hold down shift. Clear the in and out points and it will play the whole project.

Hi

Ignoring the pop-up tool hint, if you press the play button does your clip play?

If you trim a clip the play button will play the remaining clip, if you wish to play the deleted / removed parts then press Shift then play, that will play all including the removed frames.

Try this….
Using one of the Video Samples, (SP-V01.mp4) place in top track, cut in half, delete one of the halves.
View the white bar below the preview screen, shows the active section and only plays that section unless you press shift.

Thanks dtvp! I believe that is what I did. The yellow trim markers (both in and out) were right next to each other at the beginning of my project. Once I dragged the right one to the end, it played fine from wherever I am in the timeline. Although I didn't see a blue line above the track. Obviously I am not using those trim markers to edit so I must have inadvertently moved them.

Now on to figuring out how to render.....

Glad you got that sorted out :-)

It's not difficult to set a project marker inadvertanly by being in Project rather than clip preview.

Setting a range on the project doesn't seem to have any purpose other than selective export, unless someone can post any other purpose for the feature.

Hi dtvp

I believe you are correct the project range is used to export / render a section of the timeline to a video file.
There is an option for “Create Preview Range Only” from the Share panel.

The Keyboard F3 and F4 set the Mark-in Mark-out as does the square brackets adjacent to the scissors, setting the trim markers.
easy to hit those by mistake when in project playback.

Once set an orange bar should show on the timeline rule, although Tealwater26’s markers may have been too close together to see that line.

I have some other info here for using those trim markers
http://lata.me.uk/corel/bluebar/blue_bar.htm

The bar immediately below the preview screen used to be blue, for later versions has changed to white (X8)
I will update my site to show this change.

Thanks Trevor

FWIW, in X8 the project range bar is orange. Looking at your other examples they are all in clip mode, so I'm guessing that indeed the playback and export range are the main (only?) purposes of being able to set In and Out points for the whole project. In other editors (Sony from memory) I believe it is possible to cut or copy the range or force that range to mixdown (pre-render).
