PSP X7 - problem with brushes with hardness<100

Post by AdamD »

Hi!

Long story short - just bought X7 after using X3 for quite a long time. I just noticed a difference on how the brush with low hardness work.
It wasn't obvious during photo retouching, but I started playing with basics to find out what's going on, and the result is pretty frightening.

Paint Brush, settings:
Size = 200
Hardness = 0
Step = 1
Density = 100
Thickness = 100
Rotation = 0
Opacity = 100 (thanks LindaSue for pointing out my mistake!)

Brush color = #000000
Background color = #CCCCCC
8bit pallette

Both X3 and X7 running on the same PC with Win7 Home Premium 64bit.

Reference, X3 (32bit) behaviour:

X7 (64bit) behaviour:

I got the problems also with other tools when brush hardness is set below 100.
I.e. dodge brush makes the center lighter, but corners of the brush becomes DARKER.

Any ideas what's going on?

Did you mean to say that you used an opacity of 100 rather than zero?
Using Paint Shop Pro versions 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16

Is the "Wet look paint" checkbox checked? Because that looks like wet-paint mode.

If it's not checked you may want to try resetting your workspace. Shift + double click on the program icon on your desktop.

I cannot duplicate your problem without "Wet look paint" selected on the tool options palette.

I was just about to pose the same question regarding wet look. The only way I can duplicate the OP's issue is to check wet look; otherwise everything looks as it should.
PSPX9 | PSP2020 | PSP2021| PSP2022 | PSP2023 & PhotoMirage installed; PSPX | PSPX2 thru PSP2019 owned but not installed

It was NOT checked (I'm 100% sure, because I took a screenshot to "save" the settings), but in the meantime I was playing with this bug and marked wet look paint, and the switched it back off - and it solved the issue.

I have another one - this time with DODGE tool. When dodge brush has hardness=0, and you use it on the solid middle-gray background, edges of the stroke are DARKER than the background!

It's really bad, because this effect cumulates :(

The burn brush has been broken for many versions. I've submitted a bug to Corel years ago but am not convinced they see this as a bug, rather an enhancement. The way it is now the burn brush, a very basic tool, is unusable. I have the impression that when this was coded the feathering was implemented backwards - perhaps it is a question of the sign or a digit being incorrect.

I have not noticed the other problems you report.
