Having an Issue with Text
Heyo,
I'm having an issue with Text snapping to the edge of a picture, it started doing this last week, and at the time it was actually a good thing, even though I had no idea how I got it to do it, but it is permanently on now, I try to write text on a picture and the words are outside the work are and the text prompt is all I can see moving around the edge of the picture, it's really annoying as I got no idea how to fix it.
I am using Paintshop Pro X4.
if anyone can help me out that would be awesome, thanks in advance.

Re: Having an Issue with Text
Your description is unclear and we can only guess at your problem.
Showing a cropped screen capture of the situation, + your Text options bar would probably help greatly.
Some suggestions so far.
1. Select your text tool, and on left of your tool options under Presets click the down arrow to see the presets and to right click the second Icon "Reset to Default" and this will set most of your settings to their default setting (you will still have to change the units to Pixelss or Points.). See if that changes things.
2. In absence of that make sure your workspace is saved and reset your program to its defaults - Hold Shift key down as you double click start from your desktop icon or shortcut.

Re: Having an Issue with Text
Thanks for the fast reply,
I noticed that the text icon has changed, something I hadn't noticed this morning (my post was sent at approx 4:30AM Local Time), the icon for the Text Tool is Text on Path as Default, if I click on the canvas and hold Alt it allows me to get the results I want, however I would like to know how to make it not default to Text on Path,
I am self taught Paintshop Pro (in Australia we don't have any workshops aside from Photoshop ones, hell we don't even have a dedicated phone number, I have to call international) so often I click on something or hit the wrong key and then I'm stuck as all my mates use Photoshop (student editions or at their workplace), so they can't help me out very much, using the tutorials and help files only help me so far, and in this case I can't find anywhere written how to change it back to default, and using the Presets, Rest to Default didn't solve it, I also tried to click on the Text Tool several times but that didn't help (thought it might cycle through Text Tools).
Again thank in advance if you know how to get it to default back to regular Text format.

Re: Having an Issue with Text
Not sure what you are dong here. Do you mean that when you click the text tool and place the cursor over the canvas you are getting a T with a curve under it rather than just a T.Munchman wrote:

I looked for text on path and could not see that setting anwhere. If I righclick on the canvas with the text tool selected I can see a Fit Text to Path
This normally happens if you are working with vector lines using the pen tool third tool from bottom left.
If you open up a fresh canvas File > New and select only the text tool and try to place text there do you still get the Text on Path cursor?

Re: Having an Issue with Text
Just to give a full update on details.
I have used PSP x4 for a while now, and often add text to pictures (as many do), about 4 days ago, I was using it when it started to no longer place text where I wanted, it instead would put text in configuration "Text to Path" and more importantly, it would "Path" around Vector objects, opening up a new canvas (blank) and working with Non-Vector Objects/Layers works like it always has, you click anywhere on the canvas and the text is right where you click. (At least as far as I've seen, but must admit I haven't been using my computer much so haven't given a thorough testing).
The point I made about being self taught is, I am not someone who works with this type of software (I work in a factory) or have been trained in it, so it was my way of saying, don't get too technical, my mate is a publisher, and I talk to him he understands me, and corrects every mistake I make in my limited understanding, he talks to me, and the technical jargon comes out and I'm "what time is dinner? I could really use some food now, has he stopped speaking moonspeak yet".
The thing is I also can't find a default to Text to Path, I can however still write the text and use the options to stop it from defaulting to path (after I've written it that is), also if I hold ALT as I click it will stop it from going to Path as well, I have searched Google and can't find anything on changing the option, I was hoping someoe here might no how to turn it back to the original setting, as both Presets -> rest to Default and holding Shift + Opening PSP (and selecting to make it revert to original settings) have both failed, I'm starting to think I've stumbled on some sort of debuging option accidently or glitched the program, the thing that intrigues me the most is, from what I understand holding shift should make it do Text to Path, but it now says in the tool tip that Alt will make it go back to regular text, so it appears the program has this option somewhere in it or why have a tooltip written up.
Sorry if I sound a bit short/direct, I'm trying to keep my good humor, but between some a-hole at work risking my job for his own selfish greed, my mate sitting on my tablet and smashing the screen, my arm hurting like crazy (think it dislocated and relocated in my sleep, which a you can imagine is not fun) and finally this problem I'm having with that won't go away and seems to have no solution, I'm just getting so sick and tired of things happening that I can't control and affect me from doing getting on with my life.

Hi Munchman,
could you put a screen capture of what you want to do? Or a video?
I don't understand your explanations.

Re: Having an Issue with Text
Further to what Jean-Luc said, can you do a screen capture (or several if necessary) showing your workspace with an image you're having this issue with and with the text tool selected and BEFORE you click on the image to start typing text. Include the layers palette in that screen capture. Then click on the image and do another screen capture showing what your workspace looks like (including the cursor and the layers palette). And third, type some text and do a final screen capture again showing the workspace.

JoeB

Re: Having an Issue with Text
I tried to do the screen caps, but it seems that the cursor is hidden from Screen cap or something, it won't show up, also with typing text as the Text is being written outside the canvas (around the outside of the vector image) it doesn't appear at all, so sadly the screen caps aren't working or at least show no information.
I also tried to fix the issue by uninstalling X4 and noticed I had X5 available for DL (not sure when that happened, musta bought it on a whim and updated it on my Lappie, but forgot to update it on my Desktop), still got issue in X5 so must be something that is saved in system or something, I dunno maybe it has always done this with vector images/layers and I just always had images in raster or whatever the third one was,
I'm gonna just have to deal with it and hold ALT when clicking Text and the Text to Path icon is there, annoying but still if no one else in the world has this issue it must just be some weird one time glitch.
BTW not sure how I'm supposed to explain it, up until a week ago I would click on an image and text would appear at the exact point I clicked, now if it is a vector image/layer it will make the words appear around the image, like at the closest point to the cursor but around the outside of the image/layer, which in this case is outside the canvas area.
You use this tool to make the words appear like you would on a coin, where the words follow the curve of the coin instead of being straight or if you say want text to appear in a circle, normally you select the option to apply this effect, for me it defaults to this option, so I have to hold ALT key to make it behave like it would originally and how it would react a week ago.
Anyway as I said I'm done with this if anyone does have a solid answer then post it and I will hopefully see it, if not, well I just gotta keep using ALT to get the regular text tool back.
Here is an example of how you would use Text to Path intentionally http://www.paintshopprotutorials.co.uk/ ... _shape.jpg
Sorry to seem a bit of an arse, just so tired of trying to fix stuff today (as mentioned above my tablet got broken and drove around to 5 shops and two were closed down and the other three couldn't guarantee they could fix it, so coming home to find no solution and asked to explain this issue again and not being able to screen cap it just makes me kinda feel like crap).
Anyway thanks for all trying to help but yeah, unless someone can give me a definitive answer I'm out.

Re: Having an Issue with Text
Hi Munchman,
IMHO, you are doing something wrong. You have a setting, somewhere, not in accord with the action you want.
And you don't see what is wrong.
As JoeB said, make a screen capture of your full workspace, including palettes and tool settings, so we can see where is the problem.
PSP is not able to ca&pture himself but you may have two different versions of PSP open at the same time and use one for capturing the screen of the other.
You may also use third party software for your screen capture.
Or record a video of the screen.
Screen capture is absolutely necessary to learn when you want to go on graphic forums, etc.

For screen capture I use the "Print Screen" key on my computer, then go into edit in PSP and select Edit/Paste as new image. Works every time.Jean-Luc wrote:Hi Munchman,

Re: Having an Issue with Text
I am finding this all very confusing:
Your statements
Post1
"issue with Text snapping to the edge of a picture"
"I try to write text on a picture and the words are outside the work are(a) and the text prompt is all I can see moving around the edge of the picture"
At this point I am thinking that you are having trouble putting text on a photograph (picture).
Post 2
"I noticed that the text icon has changed, ...the icon for the Text Tool is Text on Path as Default"
I asked you then if the text worked normally on a fresh canvas and also if the Text on path Icon you were getting was a T with a curve under it.
Post 3
"more importantly, it would "Path" around Vector objects, opening up a new canvas (blank) and working with Non-Vector Objects/Layers works like it always has"
So it does work as normal on a fresh canvas. But here is the first clue of what is happening - you now mention that you are working with Vector objects this information should have been mentioned right at the start. You did not confirm that the icon was a T with a curve under it.
OK everything is working exactly as it should.
I hope I have been able to duplicate what you are doing and what is happening and I believe you are going about it the wrong way.
I think you are drawing a large vector object eg Preset shapes - large rectangle to almost fill your canvas and are then trying to place text in that vector object.
By default if a vector line or shape is there any text application attempts to place text around the shape as this is its common use and not inside it. You have discovered that if you use the Alt key you can get it type in the shape.
The easiest would be to convert your vector to a raster object and then place your test on there.

Here the text defaults to text on a path around the object.

Using the Alt key you can put the text inside but it is awkward as Alt and a key may be a shortcut

If the object is large then the text around the object can be off screen. So duplicate and rasterise.

The text is on a vector layer above the raster which can be hidden or deleted so that it is now above your original vector object.
