I am editing an mpg file 720x576 (4:3) 25 FPS bitrate 2456kbps and wish to convert to WMA 352x288 25FPS total bitrate 700 kbps. There is a canned profile 320 x 240 30 FPS Total bitrate 450 Kbps but its not exactly what I want. When I click the add profile button, in the window that opens the option to change the frame size is greyed out. There is also no option to adjust the bitrate. Is it possible to create a custom WMV profile? Your advice would be appreciated.
Kind Regards
Chris
PS by the way what does "enable smart render" do?

Re: How To Make A Custom WMV Output Profile - X8 Ultimate
Hi Chris
Corel removed the Advanced options after X6, this disabled the means of accessing WMV profile editor, there is no way to create a new profile using Video Studio X8.
I don’t know why Corel disabled this option.
You can use Windows Media Profile Editor to create your own profile, that will save as a .prx file to here:-
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles
Copy the new prx to :-
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8\Ulead.dat\WMV_Profiles
For 64 bit
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8\Ulead.dat
For 32 bit
The new profile will then be available from the Movie Profile Manager WMV – new – Profiles.
Video profile 720 x 576 will only produce 4:3 when using say Mpeg2.
720 x 576 is not actually 4:3, use a calculator, the pixels are not square, think of them as rectangular, Non Square Pixel Rendering
WMV uses square pixels 768 x 576 is 4:3 and should be used when working with WMV.
Sorry if that’s a little confusing?
The profile “Ulead Neptune Best Quality uses a 640 x 480 frame size, that’s 4:3.
There is also Ulead WMV 1366 x 1024 which is also 4:3
Smart Render ………… speeds up rendering times by effectively doing a quick job on the unedited sections and being more efficient on the edited portions takes longer.
Most of the time Smart Render works well, but if you think there are quality issues then try disabling to render again?

Re: How To Make A Custom WMV Output Profile - X8 Ultimate
Thanks for your reply and this useful information Trevor. Its a shame that this feature was removed. I will try and find a way to make a .prx file or get some ready made ones. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and sadly Windows Media Profile Editor is not compatible with Win 7. I downloaded its successor the Microsoft Expression encoder but have no idea if it can make .prx files. If anyone on the forum has succeeded to make .prx WMV export presets with Windows 7 please let me know. Maybe there are some ready made ones I can download.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=27870
I used one WMV preset I liked on another video edit programme and am sad I can't find it in Corel VideoStudio. Its 352x288 25FPS total bitrate about 700 kbps.
You are right that 720 x 576 is not actually 4:3 and black bars appear on the right and left of the 4:3 edit workspace in Video Studio but I am not worried about that. I am recording lectures using a DVD recorder and this is the file format I have to work with. I suppose its mepg2. My purpose is to export a decent video quality not more than 150 Mbt per 30 minutes for internet sharing. I found one WMV preset mentioned above that is not available in Videostudio gave decent quality at about 150 Mbt for 30 minutes. I suppose variable bit rate would be even better. If all else fails I could experiment with mepg4.
Thanks again for your help.
Kind Regards
Chris

Re: How To Make A Custom WMV Output Profile - X8 Ultimate
Hi Chris
I have windows Media Profile Editor installed using Windows 7, as far as I know from Expressions. I can make .prx files, whether I set all details correctly is another natter, but can produce them.
Go to Start – All Programs – Windows Media – Utilities – shows WMPE.
The actual program file here…..
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Components\Encoder (WMProEdt.exe)
Video Studio
Ulead Neptume Best quality uses 640 x 480 (4:3) gives sizes approx. 5.6 mb per minute
Ulead_Neptune_GoodQuality 320 x 240 approx 3 mb per minute

Re: How To Make A Custom WMV Output Profile - X8 Ultimate
I too was looking for a way to create a custom WMV profile and found this thread. So I downloaded & installed MS Expression Encoder 4. But the problem with using it to create a custom profile for use with VSX8, is that when a preset which I create in Encoder is saved, Encoder saves it as a .xml file, not a .prx
So I tried forcing a .prx suffix onto the end of the saved preset file name (i.e., renaming the file with a .prx suffix) while saving the file in the correct VSX8 folder. But VSX8 wasn't fooled when I later tried to find the newly added profile in the WMV profiles list.
All FWIW.
So my work-around is to save the VS project as a WMV, then run it through Expressions Encoder using the custom encoding settings I want. That worked like a charm - Expressions reformatted the video into exactly what I wanted. Yeah.. it's an extra step having to save it in VSX8 as a WMV, then run it through Expressions, but it worked!

Hi
Its good that you have managed to create your own profile, modifying or copying a profile is probibaly the easiest way to go, pity Corel removed the customise option.
After installing the Windows Media Encoder you should see these via the Start Menu

Re: How To Make A Custom WMV Output Profile - X8 Ultimate
Oh. I didn't find that program. Thanks for sharing! I instead downloaded and installed the program that Chris provided the link to in his 2nd post, above (Expressions Encoder 4).
And BTW, although Expressions didn't create a .prx for me (now I know why), the Expressions program itself handled the task very nicely in the end. As I mentioned earlier, I saved my VSX8 project as a standard WMV and then ran that through the Expression Encoder 4 program. It did the job quickly, I got the output I needed, and the video looks great. Yeah, it's an extra step, but it worked.
However, if in the future I have a need for an often-used custom WMV profile, then I guess the Media Encoder 9 will be the way to go.
Thanks again!
