Video Freezing!

I am in middle of making a short video with VideoStudio x8 - short but it is somewhat complex with moving overlays and chroma masked overlays. I suddenly have a new problem today. The playback freezes. It will play a few seconds, then freeze. I try again and it freezes at the same point.

If I turn off the overlay track, then the problem disappears and it plays just fine - but without all the overlay clips. Therefore, I am guessing it is a memory problem. But I have lots of RAM and this has never happened before.

Does anybody know this better? What is the fix?

Is it the trial version of X8 or the full version? And what is the format of video in the project? If it's high definition, have you thought about using SmartProxy, which makes a standard definition copy ('proxy') of your videos that are easier to edit and play back. Then when satisfied with all the edits and effects, they are applied back to the originals.

It is the full version. I have smartproxy enabled for video size over 720x480. No, it is not HD.

Also, I forgot to write, this is only 3 minutes long. (I do not know if that matters.)

Curious, for my own info Ken, what are you calling HD? Anything 1080 and higher?

To Joel, I have 16gb of ram and experience the same thing. Kinda wonder if the AMD processor has anything to do with it. I've read that Intel handles video editing differently and better than AMD.

I figured out that this happens when I have clips in the overlay track that have Customize Motion attributes. Is that the same for you, trailryder?

Essentially, yes, though I would also include 720P...

Then I guess it is HD. My clips are 720x1280.

Then give SmartProxy a try... The other thing you could do -- since the project is so short -- would be to render it to its final format. I suspect you will then see that the freezes in project playback are no longer there...
