VS Pro X8, X7 sound problem

The sound is working perfectly on my computer. I can record with WavePad and Audacity, the microphone window (in windows 7) shows perfect functionality with the green check mark. However, VS Pro X8 shows the sound meter but, it shows no sound when I speak, the marker remains in the center and does not expand. VS Pro X7 gives this message: "Device error. Cannot open the wav in device." It would be nice to record directly instead of using external means. Any idea on how to fix it would be appreciated. It certainly is weird.

I never done it before.
Tried it now, recorded voice over, no problems at all on X8 on XP
I used a 1$ mic and a ~10$ sound card I found in my drawer after my 13 years SB died 2 years ago.

I fixed it. It works fine. In Sound/Recording/Microphone window I had Microphone checked as "Default Communications Device." When I changed it to "Default Device," as it should be, everything worked well. I thought I had it set correctly but, close examination revealed the error.

I have the same problem. The Sound/Record/Microphone is attached, and I don't know what I have to change.
Please help.
