I wanted to apply an audio filter to the audio I split from an MPG video clip, using VSX8, so tried following the procedure outlined in VSX8 manual, page 180 and 187. After I highlight the split audio track [showing on timeline as an MPG] I click on 'Options > Music and voice' but the audio filter icon is greyed out. The manual suggests this is the way to go -p180 it says -
'Once you split an audio track from a video clip, you can apply an audio filter to the audio track. For more information, see “Applying audio filters” on page 187.'
And on page 187 –
1Click on an audio clip and open the Options Panel.
2In the Music & Voice tab, click Audio Filter.
The Audio Filter dialog box appears.
I tried moving the split audio from the narration track to the music track with no effect. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?
Thanks, Peter
PS I thought I would try the same procedure in X7 to see if there was any difference but when I clicked on the shortcut for X7 on my desktop it brought up the X8 window and that I already had open but minimised. I guess I have to shut down one version before opening the other!

Re: Audio filter option greyed out
Yes you must close one version of VideoStudio down before you can open any other version
When you 'split audio' VS does not actually create a new sound file but just places a block in the audio track to represent the sound - it will have the same extension as your video file - so in your case an .mpg video shows a .mpg sound block - you will not find a separate audio file anywhere on your computer with the same name - you can undo the split by simply unmuting the audio in the video and deleting the sound block.
As to you problem - you appear to be doing everything correctly - if I do exactly the same it works perfectly so perhaps it has to do with the video you are using
Could you put the video in the timeline and RIGHT click over it and from the fly-out choose 'Properties' grab a shot of that properties box and post it up here and maybe we will get an idea what is going on

Re: Audio filter option greyed out
Thanks Brian'
The clip is one I made on VSX6 and rendered as a seven minute clip suitable to burn to DVD. After I had made my previous post I shut down the program and opened VS X6 [not X7 which I don't have] and I had the same problem there with the audio filter icon greyed out.
Regards, Peter

Brian, Addendum - 'Audio filter' is available in another project when a WAV file is selected. Peter

Re: Audio filter option greyed out
Hi Peter
This seems to be associated with 5.1 Digital Dolby.
If you convert the sound to 2.0 Digital Dolby (stereo) then the audio folder is available. Doing share – Audio – Microsoft Wav will create a new sound file.
I don’t know why the filters do not work for DD 5.1?
Do you really require Digital Dolby Surround Sound, and was your original recordings using that?
Given the properties I assume your originals were Stereo?

Re: Audio filter option greyed out
Thanks Trevor,
as far as I am aware there would not have been any 5.1 Dolby. It was a clip I made and converted to burn onto a DVD in 2008. When I played it recently I thought I might be able to polish the sound which was pretty rough but I have since used the AVS 7 program and managed to do as well as could be expected, so I have worked around the problem, but it is good to know what might be the reason.
Regards Peter

Re: Audio filter option greyed out
Although the properties box shows that is is 5.1 Dolby Peter
look at the 3rd line under Audio - it says "Attributes - 48000 Hz , 5.1 Channels

Thanks Brian,
I should have looked a bit closer but things have been pretty hectic here over the last few days. I will have to put any VS activity on hold for the next couple of months.
