another 24p question to the pro's!

Post by oxenham1 »

I have VS X8 ultimate, and am trying to render out a 24p video we shot. It was shot on the Nikon D5100 and is actually 23.976.
The problem I have is the fact that the video always introduces artifacting, usually around the same place in the clip. If I post it out in Davinci resolve, I get smooth playback, and no artifacting. I am rendering at "same as first clip" settings. Am I doing this wrong?
VS is so easy to edit in, compared to DR, soI would rather us it, and would hate to have to learn the complicated, confusing interface of Davinci!

heres a screen grab of the artifacting. Some times it is visible in the timeline playback section, sometimes not, but always on the output render. It has happened to some gopro footage awhile ago, that I couldn't get rid of, and had to re-shoot the whole clip to make it stop. But that was another project, not this one.
Heres a screen grab of the artifacting.

What type of edits were done on the original clips? Are the artifacts those cotton balls looking things in the frame capture?

I find that 24fps is very challenging to get right. You might consider increasing the bitrate manually prior to rendering also. Consider doing a project with one clip, no edits, and render to see if VS is capable of handling your source without making artifacts... Al

I can't say about those artifacts, but I had some tiny white pixels on a project few days ago.
I never ever had them before and I didn't know what to do so I reboot and started fresh.... hey presto all gone.
If you will upload that clip for us to try, we can report back.

Here's the DB link to the rendered video. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/297 ... render.mp4
I also notice that sometimes I get a small frame stutter at 24p in VS, but again, in Davinci, it renders all fine, and nice and smooth. I hope I can find a solution, as Davinci is sooooooooooooo slow to work in (for me) compared to the ease of VS!

Thanks for those clips, but it would probably be more useful if you could upload the original video so we can test that at our end...

So A custom profile need to be made for that. Did so and rendered the test... quality was set at 10%, (that is VS problem) when set to 90% clip was fine no artifacts at all. Than I rendered to full 1920X1080 AVC/h264 , clip is fine no such artifacts at all. Tests done on my XPSP3 and outdated graphic card drivers.

Just for the record, I have rendered that original clip, and it rendered perfectly, with no artifacts at all, showing in both VS itself, and full screen VLC player on my full HD 24 inch 1920 x 1080 monitor. So I can only reiterate what has already been said by asik that there is no problem rendering those types of file to full quality HD video.

BTW, I noted that in one of the rendered videos you also provided above, there was an audio track, which didn't seem to exist in the original track. Can you confirm that the audio was added as part of the editing process???

Hi Guys

I have downloaded all samples, for dropbox I do have some download issues, but using Save Target As allows the download.

OK so I see the white snow effect on all samples. I play on various media players with the same snow.

Have I missed a download of the original video file.

Ken you mention having a sample with no audio, I see audio on all my samples?

Oxenham…. Have you updated or changed the downloads via dropbox???

I doubt if I will be able to reply as I am on holiday as from tomorrow, just thought I would report the download issues I am having?

Just checked the date and its not 1st April :D

Hello guys! Thanks for looking into this for me! I am going to zip all the files into 1, as I am sure that will be easier to download and save.
The artifacts appear around 9 seconds on only the VS output titled "last render.mp4" They are the weird pixelated black sections in the grass, and the barrel, that only appear quickly. The white stuff is actually snow from a snow machine, so that was planned. :)

The original clip, off the camera is DSC_0113.mp4.

"Test.mov" is output from Davinci Resolve, with the audio muted on output, and is fine.

and the file "last render.mp4 is the original clip, sent through VS with the settings listed in my earlier post, with no filters added, and the audio left un-muted.
The weird thing is after I render the movie out, the artifacting now appears on the clip in the timeline.........at the same time interval as the rendered clip. Like it was hiding there originally, and didn't show it's head until rendering.
Clearly it's a setting issue, I just don't know what setting to ultimately use for this project :(
Heres the DB link to the zipped files https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/297 ... esktop.zip I uploaded it 10:34 am Toronto time, it might take a bit to upload, so you might get download errors before 11:30 AM.
I also have VS X7 installed, would having both X7 and X8 be contributing?
I wonder if I shouldn't uninstall both, then reinstall X8?
The PC is a Toshiba Qosmio laptop with a 2 gig Nvidia dedicated graphics card, quad 4 with 8 gigs ram.

Thanks again!

As for my comment about the audio missing from one of the clips, I had gotten things mixed up. The audio is in fact there, as you say, with the original 'last render.mp4' clip but missing from the .mov clip.

And there is no need to uninstall X7. A number of us here have more than one version of VS installed on the same computer -- in Trevor and my cases, that's in order to be able to help out other users who are having trouble with older versions. But each version is a complete install in its own right and they do not interfere with one another.
