I get sound but no video

I am a newbie.
I get sound but no video when capturing video tapes - TV capture has sound & video.
I am using VCR connected to PNY NVIDIA Geforce FX 5700 card and AV breakout box. (not Svideo) I have tried multiple VCR's, I know there is video on the tapes. I have changed (and unchanged) every setting. I have uninstalled & reinstalled. I am thinking about becoming a Luddite.
What now?

We could start by actually finding out what you have changed to what and back etc. Have you ensured your cable is not faulty, properly plugged in? Do you use the same connections via your VCR for the TV capture or do you connect differently?
