But as Devil said, the default is set to NOT re-encode compliant source files.

I'm still trying to figure out why it wants to re-encode your files :?:

Is your project NTSC or PAL :?: If NTSC, it should allow you to use them "asis" (like it does on my machine).

My files are NTSC. However, as stated in the manual, when you import a 24fps file in PAL there is a check box to flag it to 25fps (I forget where in the software). There needs to be the same checkbox for NTSC 24fps files (23.976) to change the flag of the MPEG stream to 29.97, not re-encode the entire MPEG file to 29.97 interlaced. That way it will playback at the 29.97 framerate, but is the file is still actually 23.976. Do you follow me? This is how you author progressive based DVDs, or how most major movies are authored onto DVD.

I don't follow you (sorry).

1) I encode a 23.976p video.

2) I import that into my NTSC Project. That "convert to disc template" is OPEN -- and I do not check it (to use my source "asis")

3) I burn my DVD to hard drive.

4) No re-encoding is done to the source file.

Something seems different, because you are saying that in step #2 that "Convert to disc template" box is grayed out, and in step #4 DWS is actually re-encoding your video :?:

Well, there lies the problem. My software doesn't do that. I encode the file at 23.976p, and import just like you. However, upon import the box is checked and greyed out. Do you encode using Dolby Digital audio cause that is what I'm using? Do you use MediaStudio Pro 7.0 or another digital editor to encode cause that could be our difference too?

Used the MC Standalone Encoder -- pcm audio.

Since audio has its own tab for "Convert to disc template", that shouldn't come into play when dealing with the video.

What encoder did you use to do the encoding :?:

Can you post a small clip somewhere to see if I can import it without re-encoding :?:

George where did you get the MC stand alone encoder. That would be nice to have. However, can it take stuff from the MediaStudio timeline and encode, or are we bound by the built in encoder in MediaStudio. In any event, I used the MC encoder built in MediaStudio Pro to encode my clip. Sure I would like to post a small clip, but how do you do that? I am new to the board.

Thanks

the standalone from mainconcept.com (the trial puts a water mark on the output, but it lets you do the encoding to test it out) :)

To post a sample, you would have to have access to some online storage somewhere -- there's nothing available for us to use in this forum (afaik) :(

I don't have access anywhere to post, so can't go that route, but I will look into the standalone encoder. Thanks
just out of curiosity, what are the limitations at the moment?
Well, for one, you can't animate the buttons themselves or have some kind of a cute animation and have the the buttons activate at the end of their animation. For that matter, buttons won't do anything other than highlight after they are activated. It would be nice to be able to animate the buttons after they are activated with an appropriate audio file. Any motion to a menu is soley backgrounds and/or buttons, which is kind of boring after a while. In professional programs, you can create photoshop layers and have them animate around in a menu with audio, motion backgrounds etc. and have them be highlighted and be ready for activation at the end of the animation. Don't tell me there is a work around, because there is not right now. Hence, the reason for my initial question.

Can you provide an example of DVD Authoring Software that can do what you are saying :?:

A lot of this thread is over my head but what I want is proper VOB
import with chapters not changed to titles

and applying sounds to buttons
would be nice also. I wonder if that could be done with the playlist and multi-menus - anyway I have not tried it yet.

as for animated buttons, objects and the like thats no problem - get Cool 3D app and make
some avis for your Workshop menus - I dont know what the those other
apps cost but I got this program for relatively cheap, the Quartet pkg for
around $300.

WS2 does a helluvalot for the price. But like anything else it could stand some improvments.
