Sony XAVC S video file problem in X8

Post by hsinhow »

Hi,

I recently bought a Sony FDR-AX33 4K camcorder which uses XAVC S encoding and I also upgrade to VSX8 as it supports this format. However, I encountered many crashes when editing or rendering the clips. The problems I saw so far:

1. 64-bit VSX8 works. The 32-bit version seems cannot import any XAVC S clip at all and crashed immediately.
2. I was able to perform initial editing using multi-trim. However, after I added transitions, a simple preview will hang VSX8 after a short period of time especially after the transitions. This does not occur all the time, though.
3. VSX8 crashes when I tried to render the edited video in certain 4K output formats. Namely, 4K 3840x2160 30p MPEG4 and AVC 4K 3840x2160 30p. Strangely, 4K 3840x2160 60p MP4 and ACV 4K worked fine. My video source are recorded in 4K 60Mbps 24p and 30p.

Did anyone experience similar things?

Can you tell us your computer specifications please? I suspect that format requires a very powerful computer to edit it smoothly, and you would probably be advised to use SmartProxy, which makes standard def copies ("proxies") of the original clips. These are easy to edit and play back smoothly. And when you are satisfied with the edits, they are applied back to the high def originals.

I have been trying using X8 on a 4K project using video clips captured using Sony FDR-AX33 (XAVC S/100 Mbps). The experience is quite "bumpy" as the X8 hang/crash when I did preview or rendering in certain combinations. In order to complete a simple project, I need to make sure I save frequently and do not step on the X8 "4K landmines"...

To confirm that it is not specific to my desktop PC (Intel i7-3770K + nVidia 750Ti + 32GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate), I installed X8 (64-bit version) on my relative new laptop (Intel i7-4770HQ + nVidia 850M, 16GBRAM, Windows 8.1). The result was exactly the same. It showed that it is a X8 issue.

X8 hang/crash when:
1. Preview when 2 XAVC S clips connected with a crossfade transition
2. Share/Rendering 4K 30p video in MPEG-4 formats. Rendering 4K 60p works fine as long as you don't cancel it.
3. Cancel a video rendering will hang X8.

When X8 hang/crash, no error message and CPU (one core/thread) is occupied.

Can Corel support team look into this? There are not many 4K camcorders outside there, X8 must work with them....

Did you try SmartProxy?

As for the Corel support team, they don't visit this Board which is run by volunteers like me who are users just like you. I will however draw the attention of the Corel development team to this thread.

Thanks Ken.

Yes I have tried SmartProxy per your suggestion. And, unfortunately, it does not resolve the problem. Since I have a relatively fast computer, I even did not see much performance difference when SmartProxy is on of off.

I think there might be bug in the XAVC S decoder when the XAVC S clips were read and processed in certain combination. It puzzled me why 4K 60p rendering works (to certain degree) and 30p rendering and previewing (which is same as the video source) has issue.

xavc files have not been accepted by Windows so it is common to meet the troubles when add them on Windows.

to make xavc videos smoothly work on windows, why not find a xavc converter there? it can easily help you convert the XAVC to supported codec on windows

Notes: pavtube hd video converter is upgraded to support the XAVC encode and decode well.

Just tried using an xavc s file myself from a Sony action cam and the amount of stuttering playing it back on the timeline makes using it useless. I found this in a lot of players but expected Videostudio to work better as it claims to support this mode.
Needs some patching or optimising I think.
