Your question is not clear. You have X2 for many years so you know what videos it can work with.

The problem is most likely to be that many different versions of the mpeg-4 codec have come out since X2 was released, and a program that old simply cannot handle those newer versions. Even more recent versions are having difficulty dealing with mp4 coming from very recent smartphones which use a variable frame rate.

All I can suggest is that you try using a third party video converter and convert your mp4 either back to mp4 in it and try that in X2; or to another format such as mpeg-2. Some of us here use the freeware Format Factory which does a good, fast job. Just be careful to decline its offer during installation to also install other unwanted programs and toolbars...

Thank you Ken,
I shall give the Format Factory a try.
I have since found out that the video was filmed using a still camera with video facilities.
By the way I do have a copy of Pro X3, would that have the codecs you mention?.

Well I'll be interested to hear what happens when you try new things. But no, don't expect too much from X3. It is only a year younger than X2, and on top of that was perhaps the absolute worst version ever brought out of Video Studio. We are now over five years later, and a lot of other video formats, including in the mp4 family, have come out since then...

Hello Ken,
I have downloaded Factory format after negotiating a mine field of traps.I will certainly post success or otherwise
in due course
As a matter of interest has it been proven that a later version of Corel Video studio
will convert my mp4 file and allow me to edit it?.
Thank you for your reply.

If the video comes from a still camera, then I think you would have no trouble editing it in X8. Quite a few of our users have such video and they edit it in VS. AFAIK X8 has trouble with some mp4 from very recent smartphones which use a variable frame rate instead of the standard 25/50 fps or 30/60 fps...

Hello Ken,
I tried the factory format, from the array of options available I chose mov. for the conversion,
the short video took about 5mins the complete .
I then uploaded the new file into Video studio ProX 2, lo and behold the film appeared on the
time line and appears to be playing quite well I can't say the same for the picture quality this is slightly
degraded compared to the original.
Now providing I can edit it should be ok.
Once again thank you for your help.

Did you try just converting to mpeg-4 format using AVC? I know this does not sound like converting, but what I was trying to suggest was using the same format as your original but just stripping out some of the tags in it which might have been giving you trouble...

Hello Ken,

I intend trying another conversion and yes I can give the mp4 a go but I am not sure as to what you mean by trying AVC.
Thanks for your help.

In Format Factory, when you select MP4 as the output format, a dialogue box appears and the top button is "Output Setting". If you click that you get a dropdown menu. I always select "AVC High quality and size".

Try MP4 Converter program. It enables you to convert mp4 to other popular video formats. Here is a guide to convert mp4 to any other format you can refer to.
