I have just installed VideoStudio v4 when I try and open the software an error message comes up saying "failed to create an emplty document" "cannot initialize application [15091:1:13]

VS4 reminds me of the start of every Star Wars movie: "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..."!!! Few if anyone on this Board is likely to have any (remaining) expertise in that version. And in case, you don't give us much to go on. What is your computer set-up? How did you load VS4? Did you try uninstalling it, rebooting the computer and reinstalling it? Do you have your video camera attached when you try opening the program? If so, how is it connected and what kind of camera is it?
But I certainly would not be alone in suggesting that you upgrade to the current version 9. The upgrade only costs US$49.95... and the program is so very much better than VS4...

Actually, UVS 4 is so old, you don't even get credit for owning it -- you'll have to buy the new version outright:

In any event, I don't think trying to get UVS 4 to run on any modern PC and/or OS is worth the trouble. Even if you do get it to run, it won't support DV camcorders or DVD burning.
