Add a layer of fog to a video.
I have a video of a person walking in London by Big Ben. I want to add fog moving around the person. Is this something that is built in to Studio Pro X6?
Thanks for looking!

Re: Add a layer of fog to a video.
Welcome to the forums!
To get an effect which looks like fog, I would use the Cloud filter which comes as part of the Video Studio FX. To the immediate right of the preview screen are a vertical line of buttons, one of which says FX. Click that and look for the Cloud filter and drag and drop that on the video in the timeline. Then click on the Options tab about half way down the extreme right hand side of the program. Then you can Customise the filter to thicken the fog by adjusting the density slider, and play around with the other sliders as well until you get the effect you are after.

Re: Add a layer of fog to a video.
Hey, thanks Ken,
The problem seems to be two fold. When I add the Cloud Filter, the clouds are static on the video and don't move as they do when you preview the filter by itself. Problem two, adding the filter mutes the sound on the video. I did play around with the filter and was able to change the size of the clouds but they don't move and it really looks wrong to have the white splotches just sitting there. The video I am adding is a .avi file. Does that make any difference??
Thanks again!

Re: Add a layer of fog to a video.
What kind of .avi is it? Where did it come from? I ask since there are over 800 different video formats which call themselves .avi (which is thus mainly a wrapper format). And the formats are all incredibly different. When I apply the cloud filter and click on Options, I can vary all sorts of things, and the clouds all move on the video... So something is obviously wrong with the format you are using or the way you are using the filter...

Like Ken I have clouds moving across my screen - what speed did you set in the customise section - the default appears to be quite slow .
I have no problem with sound without doing anything else - but if you "split audio" before you apply the clouds FX do you still have audio when you play in "project" mode.

Hi
After applying a FX filter, deselect FX by selecting one of the other options, try the top Media option.
Does your audio now play?

Trevor,
Clicking on another selection instead of FX worked. I now have sound back. But the clouds just sit there doing nothing.
thanks

Re: Add a layer of fog to a video.
When you are in the Customise Filter window, have you clicked on the Play button on the far right -- indicated by the red arrow I have inserted in the attached image? And have you made adjustments to Density, Speed etc on the controls in the bottom left of that panel, on both the Basic and Advanced tabs?

Hi Ken,
Thank you for posting the information and screen shot. However, I do not recognize that screen shot and I can not find how to get there in my copy of VS Pro 6.
Thanks,
Tod

Re: Add a layer of fog to a video.
I don't have X6 on this computer, but am 99% sure it operates the same as X7 and X8 in this regard. (I am assuming here you mean X6, which is version 16, and not version 6 as you wrote.) As I said above:
When you click on the Options tab you should see what is in this image. Click on the 'Customize Filter' button and you should now have that image I attached in my last post.
Now look at these images. That Options tab is where I have pointed the red arrow:To the immediate right of the preview screen are a vertical line of buttons, one of which says FX. Click that and look for the Cloud filter and drag and drop that on the video in the timeline. Then click on the Options tab about half way down the extreme right hand side of the program. Re: Add a layer of fog to a video.
Ken,
Thanks for being patient with me. Yes, you were correct and I was able to find the customize screen and adjust the size and speed of the fog/clouds. It looked good on that preview screen, but when applied to the video, the cloud size and thickness was as previewed, but the clouds simply vibrated in place and did not flow across the screen. Strange but true. I am going to try another video clip and see if that makes a difference.
Thanks again.
Tod

Ken,
I used a different video clip, and was able to get the cloud/fog effect to work after playing with the settings.
Thanks to everyone.

Re: Add a layer of fog to a video.
Hi Tod
Out of interest what type of video caused this problem.
Right click the clip in the timeline and choose properties.
Create an image of that window and attach to your post.
It may be that you need to enable Smart Proxy, creating proxy files for that clip.
