Best early VS version for simple editing?
Hello,
I do very basic video editing, and after all these years am still using my original Ulead VS 11+. It's stable, works well with my older desktop (XP SP3) and has all the effects I require. However, I get a "file format mismatch" error about 50% of the time when trying to import an mp4 video file. My questions are:
(1) Why do only some mp4 video files trigger the "mismatch" error?
(2) Is there a codec pack or something I can add that will fix this problem, or is upgrading inevitable?
(2) If I upgrade, which of the earlier VS versions would you recommend that would handle all mp4 files without mismatch errors?
Thank you,
Neanderthal

Service Pack 1 sorted this out on version X7. This certainly worked and, as far as I know, is the first to accept MP4. So X7 may be your best option and, now X8 is out, will be reasonably priced.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

I cannot provide video properties of a problem mp4 file because it won't import, but I was able to convert one into an mpg. It will import, and it will play, however: when it's (1) in pause, or (2) in the Multi-Trim Function, the color drops out and it loses "phase" (i believe that's the term we used to use in broadcasting). Here are the properties of that converted mpg and a screenshot of it in pause.

Do you have a source from which to purchase legal previous versions of VideoStudio - legally you are only going to be able to purchase X7 or X8 with perhaps a remote possibility of finding X6.
If you tell us which version you can buy we can possible give you an overview of it's functions - why not just go for one of the later versions

Re: Best early VS version for simple editing?
Hi
1/ There are many different flavours of Mpeg4 video, since the release of VS 11 camera manufacturers have introduced many others, higher frame rates, HD frame sizes. Screen Capture software seem to be particular problematic, mobile phone coming a close second………
That leaves the video editors catching up with the new versions of video files, not surprising that VS 11 does not cope with all Mpeg4.
2 / Corel did recommend installing K-Lite a codec pack
http://howto.corel.com/en/c/Video_files ... ideoStudio
This may help, I have to say that many users found this pack caused some issues, although I have installed in the past without problems? Whether this will help ????????
3 / Like Brian says …. download the latest trial of X8, although the trial has its limitations can edit and render Mpeg4, so maybe worth giving it a run.
The Corel site System Requirements do not list Windows XP
Big changes in the workstation……..
You say
“If I upgrade, which of the earlier VS versions would you recommend that would handle all mp4 files without mismatch errors?”
Probably no version will handle all Mpeg4 types re reply 1 above

Re: Best early VS version for simple editing?
Thank you for your replies. For some reason, Brian and Lata's replies did not trigger an email notification, so I'm just now seeing them. Sorry about that.
To BrianCee: I've seen older versions of VS for sale, new in sealed box, on eBay -- I assume they are legal?
To Lata: I installed the trial version of x8 on another computer, which is running Windows 7 and has specs that meet or exceed the sys req for x8. The install seemed to go fine, but unfortunately, I'm having serious issues with the Multi-Trim function. It is skippping (jerking, jumping) over frames, and with all videos, not just certain ones. I prefer not to edit directly on the timeline. so the flakiness of the MT is seriously impacting my use of x8.

Re: Best early VS version for simple editing?
p.s. - the machine I'm running the x8 trial on, with Windows 7, is a 64-bit machine, and I did select the 64-bit option when downloading the trial, just fyi in case it is helpful.

Hi
I checked your profile and Notifications are set, so you should have received a reply? The text Unscrubscribe Topic should be seen at the bottom of this post?
The trial version is very much a cut down version, the main change is the lack of Burner options.
Also project properties can only be set for standard definition so we cannot set them to our MTS video properties, nor render back to MTS, although MP4 HD is available.
I don’t know if the project properties affects editing but certainly the preview screen quality will be standard definition.
I use MTS video from my Panasonic camcorder with no problems.
What are the properties of your video files? right click and choose properties.
You could create an image of that window to attach to your post.
Smart Proxy,
From Settings enable this option.
Any new HD clips added to the timeline will have proxy files auto created, for existing clips, right click and choose Create Proxy Files. That may improve the jerking / playback issues.
I don’t use Multi Trim but prefer to cut and trim from the timelines ( sometimes in story board view) with the help of F3 / F4 to remove end frames, the square brackets next to scissors get a lot of use, Mark-in Mark-Out.
Just personal preference, we cannot all be the same………

Re: Best early VS version for simple editing?
Thank you, Trevor. I hope this question isn't hijacking the thread -- but I am giving VS x4 a try, and so far, it is handling all my mp4 files. But I have a question about the timeline view on x4. See image below. I do not want timeline objects to repeat and be separated by frame (with the vertical dotted lines). I would like them to be contiguous. I have looked everywhere for an option to change this, but couldn't find one. I did find "Settings - Preferences - Clip Display Mode" but I don't want the name of each clip to be displayed with the image. I want the image only, without the frame-separating dotted lines. Is there a way to achieve that without having to change to the "Storyboard" view? Of all the VS versions I've demoed, this is the first time I've seen this annoying view style. Thank you

Hi
No I have not seen those vertical dotted lines on any version of Video Studio.
I notice the library only has a few samples indicating the program is not fully installed, maybe a trial version?
Or the extra content file has not been installed.
