You're a gem! Thanks Trevor.
This is important for me & very useful.

So, this worked! I then took all the trimmed clips & put them into the folder I wanted them in.
Then I imported them back into VS (just to see if I could) & that worked as well.
They were not in the original order so I clicked on "Sort By Date" & a got a perfect sequence!

I am now ready to render this video (8 years of DV tapes, captured, saved, edited down to 33 minutes & saved again) & have a few questions before I proceed;
1) Should I use MPEG-2? (I want to save the final product to my Hard Drive & make some DVD's as well)
2) Should I change the setting from "Upper Field First" to "Lower Field First" as suggested by Ken (Upper is for newer camcorders?)...just want to be sure KEN
3) Should I change the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3? (I assume I should since it is 720 X 480)
4) When I render to MPEG-2, can I use the same video later & do another format or is that then gone?
5) Can I use VS to make DVD's once rendered to MPEG-2

Hi

The workflow I would use

1 / From preferences (F6) tick Show Messages when inserting first video.
That should match project properties to the files properties, I assume Dv-Avi, also set the aspect ration to the video files aspect.

2 / (F6) Preferences create a new folder as the working folder this is where your Saved Trimmed Videos will be saved to. This will also be your projects folder, when you save a project from File – Save, save it here.
Create a different / new folders for other captures/projects

3 / Field Order should be the same as original AVI, right click a file and choose properties, note the field order should be lower for DV-Avi. So yes Ken is 100% correct. The default templates used by later versions may use Upper Field for mpeg2, so yes you may have to change that. Create a new profile using the “+” changing the field order, or use Settings Profile Manager to create a new template.

4 / Aspect ratio, as above check the properties do they show as 4:3.
Does your video look in proportion when viewing on the preview screen.
Does the video clip fill the frame vertically, for 4:3 there will be black border left and right.
I would assume the recordings done with Hi8 were 4:3. So capture using D8 should have produced 4:3.

note :- 720 x 480 can be 4:3 or 16:9 as the pixels are rectangular not square, for want of a simple explanation.

5 / Burn a DVD, Mpeg2 is the format used on all standard definition DVD Discs.

6 / Video Studio does not alter the original files, (non destructive) the DV – Avi from Saved Trimmed Video will be intact after converting / rendering, new Mpeg2 files are created.
Save these to your working Folder as set in 2 above, maybe create a sub-folder named Mpeg2 Video.

Split by Scene

You can split by scene to the timelines.
View in Storyboard view and they look the same as the library view, in fact the clips are the same.
Delete all the rubbish, leaving all good footage on the timeline.
So far no need for Saved Trimmed Video
Add a title and maybe audio.
Save the project as VSP by File Save, give it a suitable name.
Render that to Mpeg2 and you have a file suitable to burn to disc.
You can repeat above till you have 60 minutes of movies.

Burn a DVD

Start a new project, nothing in the timeline.
Share Disc option – DVD, opens the burner module
Top left for insert Media – Insert Video, find those Mpeg2/s
Create a Menu
Last window choose Create Disc Image / iso file. Deselect create disc.
Play the iso using VLC Media Player, if ok burn ISO to disc using Tools Burn Disc Image iso.

My old guides may help understanding a workflow, made with earlier versions but still relevant, read the DV-AVI , Mpeg and Share Burn to disc, my old camcorder recorded to DV-Avi.
The settings used may show for Pal not Ntsc otherwise its ok
