VideoStudio 9 Project in X8

Hello,
my Dad has worked with Ulead VideoStudio 9 on XP so far. Now he has a new computer with Win7 (64bit). VideoStudio doesn't work properly, so we thought about getting a new Program.
We hoped, Corel VideoStudio could open these old Projects and got a Test-Version of X8, but the program just crashes without comment.

Does anybody know, if this is normal, or does the problem cause on fact, it is a TestVersion? Or is there any other option for opening the old Projects (e.g. an older X?-Version)?

and welcome to the forums

Although the thought is that earlier projects will open using the newer versions I have my reservations, the complexity of X8 compared to VS9 may be the problem.
However the trial version of X8 has its limitations and may be causing the problems.

Using VS 9 with Windows 7, have you tried running the program in Compatibility mode for XP if that is available?

First make sure your installed version X8 was successful. Try creating a short project from scratch to test it. As far as I know, the "test" install versions are full working versions of X8; I think they just lack some bonus content. It is possible that projects from very old versions of VS may not open in X8... Al

Sorry, my brain was just not working.

The trial version X8 will NOT open any projects made with earlier versions.

Create a test vsp using the library samples
If you zip the VSP and attach to your post we can try opening that with the full version of X8

I'll try SP-Mode, didn't so yet. But X8 itself worked, I tested this.
And it is good news, it should work with the full version.
I attached a file as example. It is a slideshow, and there will be all Slides (and so on) missing, but I would just be interested, if X8 can basically "understand" the format.

Your VSP file imports successfully into VSX8, although successful importation will also depend on what filters you have used in the old VSP files, (may no longer be available in VSX8), not sure what will happen if you have used any SmartSound music, as VSX8 no longer supports SmartSound

Thanks for the sample, I was also able to open that vsp, the program requested a re-link as expected.

The project is quite a simple slide show having little edits applied.

As Robert mentions more complex projects may have problems.
Smart Sound will show a message to the fact that Smart Sound is Not available, clips will show Black and White.

Jo--- When you installed VS9 did you apply the Service Pack, I think that made the program suitable for Vista, (it was a while ago), that SP may help running with Windows 7?

most of the projects shouldn't be too complex, so I think, this is not a big issue. Thanks for testing, good to hear it works, so I think, we'll get the full version.

The ServicePack is not installed, I don't think, I have this file, and I couldn't find any download-location in the web. The few links I found refer to corel, and they don't provide anything before X4. So, if anyone can send or provide me the file, I'll be glad. But anyway, I hope, X8 will do its job.

I don’t know what the others were for, but certainly install the fourth option.

thanks for the pdf! It's just if some projects do not work with X8. I'll try installing it next weekend, hope X8 was delivered then too.
