Import date/time code

Post by jrufin »

Can video studio import the actual datecode & timecode of a DV movie?
I can see the datecode & timecode in my Sony TRV38 miniDV cam, but when I connect the firewire and import the movie, there is no date/time code at all! why??

Pls help...

I'm sure I will be swiftly corrected if wrong, but my understanding is that DV cams do export timecode only as data within the AVI stream, not superimposed on the video.

However you could see it for monitoring purposes while editing if you select in menu File|Preferences (or F6) then General (first) tab the last option "Display DV Timecode in Preview Window" (VS9 only).

Now you could copy that info as a Title on the video if you wish to show it at some moments.

If you want to get it within the video images you have to capture via standard video out (analog), not DV.

Thanks for the reply daniel... I don't why VS did not include a function that will superimpose the date/time codes from a DV capture.. So does it mean I need to go to analog (S-Video or RCA) capture just to have the actual date/time? I'm using VS8.

... um ... because most people wouldn't want such a function???!!!

I am not sure what Daniel had in mind when he suggested capturing in the original format as you still need to get it into the computer. But I would certainly agree with his work-around suggestion of noting the date/time of each clip as it plays in your analog camera and then, once you have captured to computer, adding a title down in the bottom left or right of each clip which contains the relevant date and time, which you can extend for the entire length of the clip or only a few seconds.

Others will have other suggestions, and I seem to recall there may even be a program out there which can imprint the date and time automatically, but if so, I don't have a URL for it.

It seems I didn't express myself correctly.
I mean, either you go go analog and use your camera's function to play the movie with datetime stamp and it will be catured that way (analog).
Or if you go DV, the stamp IS inside the stream as adata and can be SEEN in VS9 in the preview window, so no need to check the camera to get it. But it will not be part of the rendered MPG file on DVD, so you need to copy it as title if needed.
But most of the time it's only for the producer's reference...
