Has MPEG Conversion Quality Improved from X5 to X8?

Post by JPW »

I purchased VideoStudio X5 Pro some time ago. It has pretty much always met my needs for small family videos I've created. However, recently I took a family ski trip and have a considerable amount of video I'm looking to condense down in to something like a 10 - 15 minute video. The project itself is a bit more complex than what I've done in the past.

Anyway, I went ahead and created a few test files and have noticed something odd. All my raw footage is in 1080p (MOV, 30fps). I've rendered a number of test videos using the same content. One where the result is MPEG4-HD (1920 x 1080, 30fps) and another in MPEG4-iPad HD (720 x 480, 30fps). Every platform I throw the MPEG4-iPad HD (720) content at it plays fine. This is on 3 different windows machines, an Android tablet, an iPhone, Plex, Roku, etc.. However, when playing back the MPEG4-HD (1920 x 1080) file (again, using the same exact content) it will flake out when attempting to FF or REW anywhere in the file. It will typically playback from start to finish OK. It is only when attempting to jump to somewhere else within the file. Again, this is using all the same platforms.

This got me thinking that there might be an issue with the actual conversion. I haven't really gone in to VS X5 Pro to customize the conversion properties at all. I'm simply using what VS X5 Pro provides. Does anyone know whether MPEG conversion improvements have been made moving from X5 to X8? I wouldn't mind paying the upgrade fee if X8 resolved this issue for me, but don't really see the need to upgrade otherwise. X5 still mostly gives me what I need outside of this one issue.

Hmmm...well, I re-rendered the file again and MPEG4-HD and now I scan through it just fine. I guess something must have tripped up the rendering process from before? Anyway, the original question I have still stands. I'm more interested in how conversion quality and stability might have improved from X5 to X8. I'm less interested in additional features and I know there have been plenty of additions in this space moving from X5 to X8.
