Video Studio X8 will not import DVD

Post by drchristian »

I just upgraded from X7 to X8. X8 will not import DVD video. It says there is no valid content. X7 worked fine. Folders are Video_RM and Video_TS . Files are BUP, IFO VOB. I have to use a video converter to chang to MOV or other format before I can import them

You could also just transfer the vob files from DVD to your computer using Windows, then rename the extension from .vob to .mpg. Then open those in VS... Mind you, you should also be able to import them directly from the disc.

I am wondering, though, about the Video_RM folder, and assume your DVD recorder is a Philips one since that sort of folder is created exclusively by Philips machines for some reason or other. I know that some other brand DVD players have troubles with discs made with such a folder on them, and I am wondering if perhaps VS X8 is having similar problems... One other thing you could try would be to transfer the full Video_TS folder to your computer using Windows, then use Import Digital Media to import from there.

Have the same problem here. Have the Panasonic DVD Recorder, DMR-EZ485V. It creates a Video_RM and Video_TS directory. Try to import the personal home video with "Import from Digital Media" with Visual Studio X8 Ultimate and get “no valid content” error. This did work with Visual Studio X6.

Have you tried my suggestion of transferring the full Video_TS folder to your computer using Windows, then using Import Digital Media to import from there. Or simply changing the .vob extension to .mpg and inserting those files into VS?

Transferring them to the hard drive you get the same results. It actually does work for the few I tried by just changing the vob extensions to mpg. But I still think this is a bug that should be fixed, especially since it appears to have worked in previous versions. Thanks for the comments.

Hi

Using this disc, are you able to import using X7

Has the disc been "Finalised" in the recorder?

Trevor,

Thanks for the reply, sorry for my delay but I did a bit more testing. I had to reinstall VideoStudio Ultimate X6 to complete the testing. The DVD's are made without finalizing. I also reformatted the DVD+RW disk before recording thinking that may of been the problem. However, the problem still exists. I can Import from Digital Media with X6, but when using X8 you get the error "There is no valid content". Same DVD disk, this is a bug in X8. I don't own X7 but from other posts I would think it works.

I wrote Corel Tech Support a week ago but never heard a response from them.

Thanks for your thoughts. Al

Does it work if you finalise the disc, this is generally needed to use out of the machine as an RM disc is designed to be added to until you are happy with it and then you finalise it to use in other players etc.

I will try to finalize one and post the results. But it does work with X6 when it is not finalized. Using the same CD player and computer; X6 works, X8 does not.

I had this trouble in VS Pro X8 when trying to rip apart a DVD I had created maybe 16 years ago (!) with an earlier version of VS (perhaps VS X2 or VS 9).

The suggested workaround of copying the files from the DVD onto my hard-drive worked fine. I didn't have to change any filename extensions in order to import successfully "from media".

Of possible relevance: My current version of VS defaults to PAL, whereas my old DVD is encoded with MPEG-2 DVD-NTSC 4:3, NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps), 24 bits, 352 x 240. That MPEG-2 codec is rare enough that it's not included in the default installation of "Films & TV" on my Win 10 laptop.
