No, it not a mic howlround - difficult to describe but sounds like an overload.
I'm not sure how many people would know which flavour of PAL to select so I resorted to trial and error. But on a good note, I see that the device can record PAL 60 - the Pseudo PAL generated by some cheap "multistandard" VHS machines and Xboxes.
