Analogue capture
I'm looking for recommendations for a relatively cheap USB capture device that will work with VS X8 under Windows 8.1. I've tried an old "videowandler" that I got from Magix many years ago - it works in Magix but throws up a BSOD error in VS. I also have a Pinnacle USB 510, but that also gives an error message "Cannot start capture Graph". I know that the Pinnacle devices tend to only work with Pinnacle Studio. The Firewire port works with my DV camera, BTW.
I see a post about the EzCap in the pinned list above, but I wonder if anyone (Trevor?) has tried it recently.
I realize that I can use my devices in other software and import the resulting files, but if I'm going to use VS in earnest I'd rather not have to for the sake of £30.

Re: Analogue capture
One of the problems with many of those USB converters - and I have a quite expensive one - is that they are "tweaked" to work only with the supplied software. Mine will not work in VideoStudio - throws up errors.
so that solution is to simply capture to your computer using the supplied software and then import the resulting video into VideoStudio for editing - you already have the software so there is no additional expense. I do it quite regularly with mine and have always been succesful

Re: Analogue capture
Thanks Brian, but as I posted, I was looking for a device that actually worked in X8. I still have a mountain of VHS to turn into DVD, and VS seems to be pretty solid, so it would save me a lot of time if I could just stay withing one editor.

Re: Analogue capture
So on each BATCH of VHS captures (say 100+ videos) you would maybe save one minute doing it in VS rather than the software/import method - is it that important.

Re: Analogue capture
All I'm asking - politely - is if anyone here is successfully using an analogue capture device in X8/Win 8.1, and if so, what is it.
You aren't answering my question. What if I wanted to use Stopmotion?
The tech specs says that X8 supports analogue capture.

Re: Analogue capture
Hi
My operating system is Windows 7 so cannot comment on W8.
Ezcap web page does say the device is supported by W8
Ezcap -- I have not tested the device using VS 8 but 7 worked ok but the program provided templates using set data rates so would have to capture at full rate of 8000kbps. That’s a little over the top especially if you intend to burn a DVD, you would be limited to 60 minutes per disc.
Ezcap did provide its own software and I preferred that because of the data rate limitations. Many VS versions ago we could set our own data rate for capturing analogue (X2)
I use the Ezcap to connect my “birdbox cam” to the pc, not for VHS capture, read on.
Other analogue capture options……….
My older camcorder supported PassThrough, that allowed me to connect the vhs to AV- In
Then use DV- Out via firewire, this captured as DV-Avi. Quality was much better than the USB device.
Effectively using the camera as an AV / DV converter.
As for Stop Motion, that would mean controlling the VSH playback from the pc, I may be wrong but think you need a digital device to do that, besides the USB device being in the way.
You would have to capture then use Stop Motion on the file rather than during capture.
I’ll dig out the Ezcap and try a capture using X8

Re: Analogue capture
Many thanks Trevor for your helpful reply. Your EzCap is the "rounded body" one I assume as shown in the thread above. If it works in X8 then I'm happy to assume that Win 8.1 will work as well and take a punt on Amazon or eBay.
I was using Stopmotion as an example of where using the capture device software would not work - analogue output from a camera being captured by the device. I can also use passthrough, but not all DV cameras are capable of that. So I think it would be useful for people to know what capture device is likely to be the best one to buy.

Re: Analogue capture
Hi
As I mentioned I am using Windows X7
I have managed to use the ezcap with Video Studio X8, indecently my mention of not being able to set the data rate was wrong, VS X8 seems to allow that.
I am having problems with audio capture. I will re-install the ezcap software to see if that updates the USb audio driver?

Re: Analogue capture
I use a canopus advc 110 unit, they do several depending on what inputs/outputs you want.
It works in all windows versions up to the current beta 10 release.
It works with all VS versions I have used.
I have used it with X8 and win 8.1.
You need a firewire port rather than a usb port.

Re: Analogue capture
Hi
Ok I have re-installed my Ezcap software and am now able to capture using CVSX8, including sound.
I tried using CVSX7 that crashed on pressing capture.
But as I say I would not normally use Ezcap for usb capture, prefer Passthrough from the camcorder

Re: Analogue capture
Hi
I don’t have the EzcapTv version, I don’t think that was available when I purchased.
Just the bog standard Ezcap USB capture device.
Its cheaper direct from the Ezcap site.
http://www.ezcap.tv/usb-video-capture/e ... pture-card
Although when I tested today Video Studio seemed to recognise the device as a TV Tuner which I am sure didn’t for earlier versions.
Good luck

Thanks - taking the postage into account there is only 5p in it, so I'll go with Amazon out of laziness.

Re: Analogue capture
An update. The EzCap device arrived a couple of days ago and it works fine in X8 on Win 8.1. I did have to manually select the correct video standard - not just PAL, but PAL_B - and follow a bit of troubleshooting regarding the audio drivers, but that was explained in the notes that came with the device.
There is a minor irritation with the audio playback - when I'm capturing the monitored audio keeps clipping, probably because it is faded up in windows and I'm getting some sort of electronic howl-round, but it doesn't affect the quality of the captured file, so I'll sort that out when time allows.
Thanks for the advice Trevor, and if anyone is looking for an analogue capture device that you can use natively in VSX8 then the EzCap is a safe bet.

Re: Analogue capture
Hi
Thanks for the update, the audio maybe feedback, is your Mic active when capturing, I assume the Ezcap would use USB audio input.
A little annoying that these devices seem to default to NTSC, at least once set to Pal does then use as default.
Good luck
