Video Studio WONT LET ME RELINK

Post by Don »

I have two very densely edited videos, and usually when I move the video files between folders the option to 'relink' becomes available. Now it doesnt, and I am left with the only option but to start from scratch if I can't relink PLEASE if someone help let me know I'm desperate.

Move the files back to their original folders.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Hi Don

And welcome to the forums

What version of Video Studio are you using?

When you open your VSP / Video file use the File – Open Project, browse for your project file,
Otherwise use File, choose one of your project to the bottom of the list…
what happens then? Anny error messages

Hello all,

I am in exactly the same situation. An extensive editing problem as follows: raw video imported to VST Pro X7 Ultimate, edited (image correction FX's) in the time line but raw video work without extra's (transitions, extra audio). So the "storyboard" is made and supposed saved to my external HD which included also a file with a backup of the raw fragments of the camera. When I open VST under "open project" the project get's in the timeline but with no video (white and black spaces where the video's do normally go). A window opens saying "relink" but the message points to the "original file" which is the SDXC card I used to record the video fragments.

Is my "actual unfinished work " on my external HD then not supposed to contain the video fragments in that work?

What advise can you give? I use the external HD to keep the laptop HD as empty as possible just to avoid overloading that laptop HD. If I have to restart, that's a work of several hours... .

You have gone off at a bit of a tangent Collector - when you choose Relink yes the message points to the original location because that is what you inserted them from and where VideoStudio thinks they are - it is then up to you to use the Browse function within Relink to show VideoStudio the NEW location of the files. Browse to them and select them.

It is always best to copy the files from the SD card to your hard drive (internal of external) BEFORE you add any of them to VideoStudio - that way you are less likely to have relink errors

Just to correct a possible mis-understanding you have - when using VideoStudio none of your files are actually *IN* VideoStudio - everything you see in VideoStudio are just pictorial links to your files wherever they may be - so if you imported to a library/timeline from an SD card then your videos are still on the SD card.

Hi Collector

Do you still have the SDXC card, if so as Brian says copy the cards content to your hard drive. You should then be able to re-link to those files, the re-link window indicates the file its trying to find by the name at the top…

When you inserted the clips to Video Studio they remained on the card, the clips on the timeline are virtual clips or thumbnails representing the files on the card.

Once you have inserted clips to the program do not move the original files, nor re-name them as that will also cause a re-link.

Hopefully you still have that card intact.

OK, thanks both for the advice. I do have two copies of the raw video fragments. I will copy the card content back to the internal HD same place. Hopefully that will work.

There is another thing to look out for if/when using an external hard drive -- which I do all the time. The problem is that I often use several external hard drives, not necessarily for video editing but for other reasons, and any number of them might be connected at any one time. This sometimes causes the hard drive with your video on it to change its drive letter and Video Studio will be looking for the video on the original drive letter... It's easy enough to change the letter back using Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management, but I usually check what drive letter is assigned to that drive before I even open VS for an editing session, and change the letter if necessary so that no relinking message even appears when I then reopen the project.

Hello Ken,

Thanks for the advice.

I found the solution by adding the .VSP file of the editing to the file with the video fragments on the external HD and opened the "project"and that works perfecly well.

I uoloaded the raw fragments also to YT so I have several copies including this one "in the cloud".

Im using Video Studio Pro X7, i've attempted to put the files back in their original place but that does not work, relinking literally doesn't appear as an option, ive used video studio for years and never had such an unneccesary problem

Hi

I can only assume that the VSP has had the files removed, probably by mistake.

If clips existed within the VSP file then they will appear on the timeline, either in full view or ask for a re-link. Either way the files should show.

There have been instances of VSP’s being corrupt, unfortunately we don’t have a solution, usually show an error.

CVSX8 trial
By the way, have you used the trial X8 to edit your project and now trying to open the same project in X7
That wont work unless you specifically save for X7
