VS Ultimate X8 Installation Always Fails at Same Point

Post by bgm1961 »

INSATLLATION SUCCESS! (See Mar 22 post)

Hi all, First time user here... many years ago I was a MediaStudio Pro 8 user. Been away for a while and am trying to get back into it with Video Studio Ultimate X8. But the installation fails.

I purchased the 64 bit version online. Download was successful (as far as I know). To install, I run: VideoStudioUltimateX8_64bit_1Main.exe"

- The failure occurs shortly after pressing, "Install Now". The installation status screen provides this failure notice: "Installation Wizard not completed", and, "Fatal error during installation". (And that's all it says).
- The installation always fails when it reports that it’s, “Configuring Visual C++ 2008 Distributable”

All steps prior to the failure, of course, execute normally:
1. Upon running the exe (as administrator), I save the setup files to the recommended location (19 GB available). (I've also tried installing to my D: drive (300GB free) - same failed result)
2. Installation begins automatically
3. I accept agreement
4. I copy and paste the correct License Key
5. I select country (USA), and Installation folder (recommended) and click, "Install Now"
6. The failure window (described at the top) pops up.
7. Again, at the time the failure notice pops-up, the message text at the bottom of the window reports that the installation process is configuring C++ 2008.

I attempted the installation procedure five times (cleaning the setup files and running "VSX8_Cleanup.exe" which I found here, between each attempt). Each time the process fails at the same point ("Configuring C++ 2008"). The first two attempts were done the same way and used the recommended default settings. For the other three attempts, I tried something different for each … installing into a different folder, accepting different options, etc. As this is the FIRST program I’ve ever had trouble installing anything on my system I contacted Corel Tech Support, hoping for a quick easy answer. They of course instructed me to take all the basic steps, which I did:

1) Turned off UAC
2) Used MSCONFIG to disable all startup programs and services except for Microsoft services. HOWEVER, I have AVAST installed and despite AVAST being "unchecked" for startup, it starts regardless. So I DISABLED all AVAST protection before reattempting VSX8 installation.
3) All critical and important MS updates are installed.
4) The VSX8 setup files are deleted before each re-attempt and are also scrubbed from the recycle bin.
5) I also used a Temp File cleaning utility (TFC.exe) before attempting reinstallation.
6) Again, I ran "VSX8_Cleanup.exe" between attempts.

And still, installation failed the same way and at the same point as before. Like everyone else, I've got multiple versions of C++ on my machine. Could the multiple versions be a problem?

The latest response from Corel Tech Support is to book an appointment for Remote Connection assistance. I gotta admit that I'm a little wary of letting an off-shore tech get inside my system. But I also really want to get this $99 software installed. Advice?

Thanks in advance!

Hi

Hopefully Corel Support will come up with a solution.
I once took their offer of remote assistance, they used a program called Team Viewer, I had no problems with their approach, although they did not solve my particular problem?

Did you download the file again, just in case you have a corrupt file.
For what its worth my VideoStudioUltimateX8_64bit_1Main.exe file is 1.385.566KB.
That may not be relevant as there seems to be some confusion in what the file sizes are???

You should also try installing the 32 bit version, same serial number

Also try installing the Trial version, that is a cut down version.

If all fail to install then its your system?

Use Windows to un-install, the cleanup tool does not remove all personal data?

Thank you for your reply!

Yes, I must admit that despite not solving my problem, I HAD A VERY POSITIVE EXPERIENCE WITH TECH SUPPORT DURING THE REMOTE SESSION. The only negative (again other than the problem going unsolved) were the hours as the tech rep was working from the Philipines. So as the session became longer and longer (over four hours) and as he worked through his lunch, I started to get sleppier and sleepier as I was trying to stay awake in the wee hours of the morning!

Anyway, the rep took the same actions described above, and yes he also downloaded a fresh file (but it was the same as mine). Though he never considered trying the 32 bit file. And as the installation always fails while its configuring C++, he uninstalled all of my C++ files and reinstalled every C++ file from MS's web site (that took a chunk of time). But no luck. During the session he always felt that the reason the installation fails is because there's some remnant of a previous attempt someplace on my system. So he spent a lot of time searching through all the user accounts and registry trying to find such remnants - again to no avail. For each attempt, he used teh VSVX8 cleanup tool.

And also, he deleted MS Update KB2670838, claiming that's a common culprit to installation failures. Still, that didn't work. And so now I'm left with IE 9 on my system instead of IE 11. But that doesn't concern me as his final reccomendation is (and you saw this coming) is to reinstall Windows. Then try again.

At first I was resistent to the idea as I'm not having a single problem with running any other software, nor have I ever had a problem with installing any of the 40+ programs I've installed on this machine. Video Studio is THE ONLY software which has given me a problem and now I have to reinstall my entire OS just for this one program? That notion is leaving a sour taste with me - though nothing against the tech rep so I never shared that with him. But as I really prefer VS over the other options (remember I was weened on Media Studio Pro) and also that I've already paid for it, I am seriously considering reinstalling my OS. It has been running for over three years so perhaps it is time, regardless of how healthy I think it is? So now i'm weighing doing a non-destructive reinstall vs a complete wipe and resinstall. (I have a partitioned drive and most of my programs and data files are on drives D: & E:). So that's where I'm at now.

Thanks again for your suggestions... I still may give one or two a shot regardless!

You could try "Run as Administrator".

Do you have Win7 SP1
Do you have .net 3.5.1
Do you have .net 4.5 - probably not necessary -

Have you tried installing in safe mode? - long shot as it's drivers -

You could turn off processes or services in Task Manager one by one until it works, but that would take a lot of time and who knows if it will work.

Maybe try to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x64) on it's own

Before destroying your install, I usually made a drive image so that I can put it back to where it was - I use Paragon Backup and Restore free -, or I get another drive and test install a new install on it before wiping what I have.

Maybe you can spot something in Google search

Thank you very much for your reply. I apologize for my delay in responding. As much as i want to start playing with VS X8, the thought of having to reinstall my OS is making me cringe so I've been avoiding it!

Anyway, yes, I have SP1 and the latest .net. And I've tried safe mode. I haven't doen the "turn off processes one by one" thing yet, though.

I will try reinstalling only VB C++ 2008 on it''s own - that's a good idea.

I also checked out the Google pages you linked... I saw some possibilities in ther eto try out. I appreciate that.

This page caught my eye: http://softwareerrors.net/corel-x5-fata ... tallation/
Have you heard of this software? Although it's mentioned for X5, it appears to be a 3rd party software that I imagine isn't written to support only Corel products? (I haven't examined or run the application yet - only assuming from the short bit that I read).

Thanks again!

INSTALLATION SUCCESS!

Thanks all for your assistance. I finally took the time to figure out why Video Studio X8 Ultimate wasn't installing. My LAST RESORT was to reinstall Win 7 and I'm thankful that I didn't have to go there!

As described in my OP, the Video Studio installation always failed while it was "configuring MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable". So it seemed natural to look there. In summary, the problem turned out to be permission settings in some of the registry keys for C++ 2008! I changed the settings and viola!

Even during the Remote Session with the Corel Tech Rep, he tried to reinstall all the C++ versions on my machine. Most he had luck with, except he wasn't able to uninstall C++ 2008. So I think he did a "Repair" action instead and he seemed satisfied that's all he could do. So when the VS installation still failed after that, is when he told me to reinstall Windows.

As I mentioned earlier, having to reinstall windows just to satisfy the whim of one program rubbed me the wrong way, so spurred by (your advice above) I tackled the C++ 2008 issue again before admitting defeat. It was while trying to UNINSATLL C++ 2008, that I received error notices that some of the registry keys couldn't be accessed (and for some reason the tech rep told me it was because my computer was on a home network.. ??). A little "Google Homework" showed me how to find those keys and change the settings. After that, everything went like clockwork. I was able to reinstall C++ 2008. And after that, the Video Studio X8 installed normally!

So I have to assume that the reason the Video Studio installation failed in the first place, was due to those permission settings in the registry keys of C++ 2008.

Thanks again for all your help!
