Updated - Resetting the Library removes Ultimate effects

Post by dtvp »

Updated - not only are the effects removed, you have to go through hoops to get them back - reinstalling doesn't work, you need to reset the program to factory defaults.
Now read on...

It's probably me being a bit thick here, but how should I access the plug-ins that are installed in Ultimate? I've run the 3Bonus.exe file and it appears to install everything. I assumed they would appear in the FX tab of the Library.
If it matters, I still have the x7 Trial version loaded and read that might cause an issue with Boris, but apparently not the others.

Yes they all appear in the FX library for me - some people did have problems with Boris being in both X7 and X8 but I thought Corel had resolved that problem

As one of the first downloaders I had to delete Boris for X7 (although not Videostudio itself) before Boris showed in X8

As you only have the trial of X7 which will presumably expire soon anyrate it would seem sensible to uninstall that and see if that cures the problem

Definitely uninstall the trial (notwithstanding the option to "activate" it entering the license key) and install the full binary. There is a huge difference between file sizes between the trial and purchased version just for the base software (not even including the additional installation binary for the FX) and a whole bunch of stuff is left out of the trial (to make it a more manageable download size I guess) such as Auto Music and who knows what else. Also, the trial is the Pro not the Ultimate and even in the purchased version there is a difference between the base install binaries between Pro and Ultimate (again not counting the separate FX install).

Once you do that yes, the plugins are all in the FX (some are separate entries in the FX menu, others are effects underneath a single entry but you should be able to find all 10 of them all easily with names that correlate pretty well with the advertised names).

Thanks guys

Just to be clear, it's the X7 trial I installed, then I bought and installed the full Ultimate X8 program.

At least I'm looking in the right place!

Uninstalling X7 didn't seem to make any difference so I'm in the middle of uninstalling and reinstalling X8 - is it worth running a Registry cleaner?

Yes I understood that dtvp - that is the X8 library in the image I posted.

I think I would have tried installing just the bonus file again first before removing all of VideoStudio - but if your already under way then continue.

Thanks Brian - the X7 info was for tanguero.

I only saw X8 and Boris in the Programs list. I assume that right? I've uninstalled X7, X8 and Boris, run CCleaner's registry cleaner and I'm currently re-installing in the order Main, Content then Bonus. It's possible that I did the last two in the reverse order when I first installed, but I did rerun the Bonus before removing X7 Trial.

OK, I've got them now :-)

One thing I didn't check was if they had installed to my X7 installation, but I doubt it.

So - because I was on the cusp and was trialing X7 when X8 was released something must have got awry because I didn't uninstall the trial version first. I could understand this being a good idea if I had the X8 trial installed, but it looks as if it's essential even if if you have the X7 trial.

Is there a way of letting Corel know?

OK, I was wrong.

When I got the plug-ins working, I looked at Mercalli and realized that I'd seen that interface before. The plug-ins must have been there when I first installed X8.

So where had they gone? After messing around with Import I remember trying the Reset Library function to clean things up. Worked well, but it must have removed the plug-ins.

So, just to see if I was going mad, I exported the Library and then reset it. There in front of my very eyes I saw messages informing me that the plug-ins were being deleted.

OK, go figure, as they say. But hey, I'll just Import the Library I just saved, eh?

Now, I may not have imported the correct Library, but still no plug-ins. Is there a default one?

One other thing you can try is to go to C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (or VideoStudio Pro (x64) if you have the 64 bit version), and change the name of the folder named 18.0 to something like 18.0_OLD, then restart VS. This time it should rebuild that file, taking into account the bonus plugins in the vft_plug sub-folder. Next time you open VS it should take an little extra time to create that file, and then those plugins should now show.

Ah, thanks Ken! that has restored the Plug-ins. I assume that is a sort of Ground Zero option?

So what's wrong with the Library reset? It shouldn't remove the plug-ins, should it?

I have no idea, though I would have thought resetting the library would revert it to its factory state and contain only the library installed as part of Video Studio. Remember that the plug-ins are just that and thus extraneous to the factory libraryu...

But as I say, I am not certain as I have never, in all the years I have used VS, reset any of the libraries. So I will leave it to those more experienced in library resets to provide more detail or a correct answer if I am wrong, Trevor (lata) IIRC is our library expert, but he is away until tomorrow. Hopefully he will get back to you after his return.

Resetting the Library removes Ultimate Plug-ins

Post by dtvp »

So, I'll bump this again. The answer isn't "Don't reset the Library", or if it is then that feature should be removed from the Ultimate version.

In reading this forum I see people asking how to report bugs to Corel without having to take out a support ticket, but haven't read an answer.

I'm sure the moderators (and presumably beta testers) have the ability to report bugs but if they decide that it isn't a bug (in their opinion, because they don't use that function) where does one go from there?

I've drawn this thread to Trevor's attention so hopefully he will get back to you...

As for drawing Corel's attention to things like this, yes we can. But depending on what Trevor might have to say, if the library reset is meant to return the library to its factory state i.e. without the plug-ins, then it is behaving properly and cannot be properly termed a bug. Whether it is desirable or not is another matter.

The only other way of doing it is by posing the question on the Corel/Video Studio facebook page. People seem to get answers, and fairly quickly, when they do so -- no doubt Corel wanting to show a good public face!

I can confirm that resetting the library will remove all additional plugins you have installed, but as Ken stated, that's the purpose, to revert back to it's original state. What I do is to copy the vft_plug folder and any other folder that has had additional plugins added, to a separate location, then copy back after library reset, works most of the time, but on the odd occasion still have issues
