How to create space...

Post by Rikk »

Sorry I didn't know exactly how to word the title. I've been using magix movie studio but wanted something with more functionality but more importantly to actually use hardware acceleration.

Ok, back to the plot...I've been working through the tutorials and yep all really good but what I can't work out how to do is how to insert blank titles, ie 5 seconds of black with a title written on it, not overlaid onto the video as every tutorial shows you how to do overlays but I've found nothing about this.
I know it's going to something really simple but if i try to do something similar to the pic below from magix it won't let me drag the video segments apart.

Thanks.

Yes indeed it is simple - just grab a plain colour block from the color library - drag it down into the timeline between two videos and set the duration you require

can be any colour you like - black if that is your preference but many are available - can even be a photo if that suits your title better

then type your title as normal

Thanks for that :)
Have to say it seems a very strange unintuitive way of doing it but hey, if it that's how it does it, that's how I'll do it 8)

how to insert blank titles, ie 5 seconds of black with a title written on it.

That seems very intuitive to me. Its exactly how you expressed it! :|
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Rikk -- just so you are aware of it, only the main timeline in Video Studio will NOT accept spaces. Everything in it has to be either end to end or even overlap with a transition -- whether video or photos or color panels. That timeline cannot accept any spaces at all and will automatically place consecutive clips/photos/color panels together.

The same is NOT true for the overlay tracks. So to do it the way you find intuitive, you would need to put all your video in one of the overlay tracks and essentially ignore the main track. Then you could separate the clips where you wanted to insert the titles in the Titles track...

Note, however, that this will only work if you are happy with a black background for the title. If you want another color, then you would need to place a color patch for the entire length of the project if using the main timeline, or else position a color patch in another overlay track where the break occurs in the first overlay track...

Am I missing something here? Why not put the title on the main track? Then it will make it's own "gap".

Thanks Ken, i did wonder if that was possible as I noticed that happened when I dragged a segment down when fiddling but didn't know if it had any 'consequences' I do that from now on then, thanks :)

My preference is to separate onto tracks, that way i can also save them as templates, ie the vast majority of my stuff is wheelchair basketball so i have a standard template with an intro title and then 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and end titles with a score.

If it's all on the same track as soon as I delete the video to leave it empty all the titles will shuffle down to the start. I just find it easier to work with if things are separated out.

Now if only I could work out why my 60fps videos only ever upload/display to youtube as 30fps I'd be a happy man ;)

dtvp -- yes you can do that too for the titles which come with VS since they are essentially already video clips. But again that will only work if you are happy with a black background. Otherwise, if you want another color, you would need to place a color swatch in one of the overlay tracks where the title appears in the main timeline.

The provided titles (and those made manually) are, however, overlays and would more correctly be place in either the title track (which is just an overlay track with a fancy name) or in another overlay track. They are also meant to be transparent apart from the title itself, so can be overlaid on video so that you can still see the video playing but with the title over it...

Yes, but if you read the original post the OP just wanted a title over a black background. So just create the title on the title track and then drag it into the main track and the gap is created.

I think dtpv that you have just taught me something - I am confident that in earlier versions of VideoStudio titles which you typed had to be in the title track and it was therefore necessary to put something behind it - but some where along the line there seems to have been a change to the way titles work - and now - as I have just proved to myself - you can indeed create a typed title in the title track and then just slide it up over a join in the main tack where it acts just like a video or image clip.

and further - - I have found that if you change the background colour of the preview screen - the title appears over that colour - so any colour back ground for your title is possible
