Video Studio X7 newbie needs a little help

Post by zarchy »

I used Video Studio 2 SE and Movie Factory 3 for many years and was pretty comfortable with those tools. Recently, I bought a new computer and upgraded to Video Studio X7. Seems like a totally new sandbox and I'm kind of struggling to get back to my previous level of competency.

I'm trying to extract some clips from an imported DVD. I put the video in the timeline in the Edit view, set the Mark-In and Mark-Out points, then switched to the Share view. I selected MP4, "Same as Project Settings", entered a file name and location, then hit the Start button. Nothing happens. What did I miss?

You need to set the section to be exported by using the sliders under the preview window - not the mark in mark out settings

With your video in the timeline under the "EDIT" tab - first change to "Project" mode

under the preview window are two orange sliders on a white line - with you mouse cursor slide the left one to where you want your selection to start - you will notice an orange line appears above the timeline.

slide the right cursor to where you want your selection to end - orange line indicates selection

you can if you wish now play the selection to test your cuts as only the selected portion will play

Now go to share and select your output format but make sure "Create preview range only" down at the bottom is checked

clicking "start" will render out only the selected portion

Thanks Brian. I followed your steps, pretty carefully I think. But still nothing happens when I hit the start button.

What, if anything, should I see in the little screen in the upper left corner when I'm in the Share tab?

When you go to the 'Share' screen you should see your video in the little screen at top left - you should also be able to play it from there

Is your video in the 'Edit' timeline when you go to share ?

Video section selected in timeline - note orange line along the top of the timeline indicating section selected
click on the image to see it bigger
click on the image to see it bigger

When you go to "Share" you should see your video in the screen
click on the image to see it bigger
click on the image to see it bigger

Brian,

When I'm on the Edit tab, the video is in the timeline and I see the Orange sliders when I select it. However when I switch to the Share tab, I do not see it on the screen there,

When you open the Share tab - under the preview window - does the information there show a destination drive ie - output drive: c ?

I get the sense that there is some step missing. When I position the sliders in the Edit tab, is there anything else I have to do before switching to the Share tab?

No nothing - just go from Edit to Share - when I do it the preview appears immediately

to be honest I am at a bit of a loss at the moment - hoping that another user will jump in with a solution

have you just tested with a different video - just put one of the Corel supplied videos in the timeline and switch from edit to share see if there is still no picture

I have just done some experimenting and have found one way to replicate your problem - can you confirm that your video is crisp and clear in the TIMELINE - just as my screen shots show it

Brian,

I'm not at my computer right now, but as I recall, the video in the timeline is not crisp and clear. It appears faint. What does that imply?

that implies that the video track is de-activated - one click on the icon at the very left end of the timeline (film reel and computer screen) will activate it and all should then be well - let's hope so

Hi Brian

I don’t really know what is going on here, nor whether Zarchy has set the “preview range”

But if we set the Preview Range, then Disable the Track, (shows greyed out.)
When you Enable Track the Preview Range is also reset?

I have not noticed that before, not that I Disable Tracks????
Maybe worth remembering when re-setting the Range, a quick way to do that..........

Well, enabling the track did the trick. Thanks so much for your help! I don't know how long i would've floundered around before i discovered that.

Is there any way to reposition the sliders precisely without using the mouse? I'm trying to move the slider to an exact spot and the mouse seems to make that very awkward. I tried typing a number in the time code box but that doesn't seem to do it.
