VS X8 and MPEG 2
I might be being a bit slow today but I downloaded the trial earlier and tested it with a video file. I might be missing something obvious but I couldn't find anyway to save the file as HD 1280 x 720 nor in fact, any option to save as MPEG-2. Is it just me, or is the option really not there?

Re: VS X8 and MPEG 2
Have a look at the attached image. Can we assume you went to Share to convert whatever format your original video was in to something else? If so, then the default page will have that icon of a monitor screen highlighted in the top left. And to get 1280 x 720, select AVC/H.264 as the output format, then click on the downward pointing arrow in the Profile box, and select 1280 x 720...
And of course, in the image, mpeg-2 in a number of HD and standard def formats is immediately to the left of AVC/H.264. Do you have these in your setup?

Re: VS X8 and MPEG 2
The trial version doesn't have the buttons shown in your picture, There are two rows, top row from L - R:
AVI / MPEG-4 / WMV / MOV
Bottom Row:
AUDIO / CUSTOM.
I was right, there isn't any way at all in the 64 bit trial version of X8 to save as MPEG-2. Defeats the purpose of a trial version somewhat, if I can't try out a very popular video format! It's getting uninstalled.

On PD13 trial one can't output the more popular AVCHD/H264 codec.Mist001 wrote: I was right, there isn't any way at all in the 64 bit trial version of X8 to save as MPEG-2. Defeats the purpose of a trial version somewhat, if I can't try out a very popular video format! It's getting uninstalled.

Well in all the years I've been using the programme I have never heard of the trial version being restricted in any way - we have always told people that the trial is a fully functioning programme allowing them to test everything
This is a new and very disturbing move on the part of Corel.

Hi
Using the Custom option, is there a "Mpeg Files " option?
That would create Mpeg2

Re: VS X8 and MPEG 2
Could this be due for the need to pay a license fee for mpeg-2? It's not included in the cheaper versions of windows, for example. If Corel "gives away" software which includes mpeg-2, isn't it still legally bound to pay the fee?

Re: VS X8 and MPEG 2
I doubt it. All previous versions of VS with which I have been associated (going back to version 7 without an X!!) had trial versions which included mpeg-2. It would be maniacal on Corel's part to not make two of the most common and most used codecs available in the trial version. Mind you, X8 has seen a couple of other such deletions (of SmartSound and the Blu-Ray burner, which you now have to buy separately) so I guess it is marginally possible. However, I have sent an email to the Corel exec in charge of VS to ask about it and will report back if/when I get a reply.

Re: VS X8 and MPEG 2
I hate to advise that I have been informed by Corel that it was indeed a licensing fee issue which caused them not to include either of these options in the trial version. Apparently they decided to go only with the formats for which the codecs were already on any computer because they were installed as part of Windows, rather than by Video Studio. I guess that was also the real reason for not including the Blu-Ray burning option as already included in the price, and indeed why they dumped SmartSound in favour of the limited Scorefitter, which they already owned -- regardless of how limited the library for that is in reality.
I guess one has to draw a fairly obvious conclusion as to the profitability of not only VS but Corel more generally. And one can only speculate as to how soon -- rather than if -- the speculation elsewhere in this forum about the inevitable amalgamation of Pinnacle Studio and Video Studio will come to pass...

Re: VS X8 and MPEG 2
After a lot of campaigning by users, Smartsounds can now be used as a plug-in in Pinnacle Studio. In fact, the plug-in was included free with PS17.5. So I wouldn't give up hope. Also, you need to activate Blu-ray in PS18, and it's only available in the top of the range package (although it is free).
There isn't even a trial version of PS - presumably because they haven't got the resources to prune out the mpeg-2 codec from the code. I guess that there has been a tightening up of the licensing of mpeg-2 and Corel can't afford to pay $4 every time someone downloads the trial version.
As for the eventual merging of VS and PS, well, the underling editing interfaces are so fundamentally different they would have to decide if they wanted the advanced/harder to keep in sync PS version or the (IMHO) more restrictive but easier to use VS one (but I guess I'm getting off topic now.)
