Is this playback glitch normal?

Post by dtvp »

Hi - just bought and installed X8. First post.

Is it normal that when you are playing a clip and press stop (or the spacebar), the playback stops and then jumps back a few frames?. It doesn't seem to happen with the timeline selected, and varies with the complexity of the codec - hardly noticeable on SD mpeg-2, quite obvious on H.264? I'm running an i7-4790K with the Intel on-board HD graphics. The same thing happened on my i7 laptop when I installed the X7 trial version, and that has a graphics card.

Tried the Sample clip SP-VO2, for example. This is a PAL installation, if that matters.

It's not a huge issue, but a bit disconcerting at first. I wondered if there might be a fix or at least that it's not just me :) .

First off, yes, as a new user your first two posts need to be approved before you or anyone else can see them. But that would have been explained in the email you (should have) received after registering. So I have now deleted the shortened version of this post.

As for your glitch, I simply don't get it when I play any clip -- including SP_VO2 -- in either Clip or Project mode. And mine is also a PAL installation. When I click on the stop button, the playback stops then and there, and the cursor on the timeline remains absolutely still at that stop point.

Thanks Ken. Sorry about the moderation confusion.

Yes, the cursor stays in the same place, but the video in the preview window jumps back a few frames, or just a field at times. Very rarely does the preview not change after I press stop. I've tried to attach a screen capture.

I've also seen this with my laptop as well, when trying the X7 trial version. That has a separate video card.

Hi

I wish I had not tested that, yes I see the video jump after I stop playback.
Only affects Clip playback.
Must have always been there but has not caused any problems
I’ll probably notice that from now on?

Its more noticeable using X8, very little movement using X7

Hmmm... I've just run my test again, this time looking exclusively at the preview screen, and now I see the same thing. I probably never noticed it before because my eye jumped from the screen to the timeline to make sure the cursor remained still when stopped.

Interestingly enough, Trevor, I found the delay before the jump to be slightly longer in X7 playing exactly the same clip, than it was in X8. In the latter there is a gap of about 1 second between hitting Stop and seeing the jump back. In X7 the lag is closer to 1.5 to 2 seconds...

However, again I can only say that the cursor itself does not jump back, and the frame counter to the bottom right of the preview screen also does not jump back. So I am still not worried about this happening. Like you, I suspect it has always happened but has simply never worried me because it does not affect the editing. Moreover, as you say, it is only in Clip mode, not Project mode...

So not just me then.

I suppose you could pretend that it anticipates the human reaction time, but then it should do it in Timeline mode as well

I guess it doesn't really affect any editing operation, but it does look a bit shoddy.

It's me again :)

I've also discovered another symptom of what must be the same glitch.

[*]Highlight the sample video SP-V02 so that appears in clip mode in the preview window.
[*]Set the Out point to 2 seconds.
[*]Use the Play control or the spacebar to play the clip.

When the playback reaches the end of the clip, the last few frames are omitted from playback so there is an inelegant jump forward to the last frame. So, if I were trying to make a value judgement if I have trimmed a clip too abruptly (or too loose), this glitch would make that impossible to do.

If I need to cut on precise movement/action I use the one frame advance
If I need to cut on precise audio I cut using wave display.

VS as sub 100$ software will never be perfect so are the other in that same price range.
If they will, what the 300$+ software's will do?

I have two other "sub $100" NLEs and neither of them do this. It's hardly a programming challenge.

In a "$300" NLE I'd expect professional codecs, Multi-cam, secondary colour correction and proper support. In any NLE I'd expect glitch free playback.
