Hi to the new webboard! Pulsating pixels on rendered stills

Hi David
Today I have made a few test slide shows, in order to create the dreaded pulsating pixels.
I used raw jpegs and resized ones in a variety of projects.
When I use the template Pal Dvd all appears to work fine, the images are as still as still can be.
If I use the Mpeg 2 template, that’s when it started again. Pulsating pixels in the image highlights, twitching at the start and end of transitions,
I do edit my templates to my needs both Pal Dvd and Mpeg 2, but only the Mpeg 2 template gave me trouble.
David can you try a new slide show, and use the Pal Dvd template not Mpeg 2.
I know when you look at properties they are alike, they don’t act the same.

i used the PAL DVD template. the gaussian blur effect on the picture seems to fix it using photoshop elements 2. i did adjust the template as per the previous posting and converted audio to AC3 in DVD WS2.
i am assuiming the gaussian blur smudges out the pixels so when converted to MPG2 it makes the pulsating effect go?!?.
watch this space if ulead releases a patch or not!

HI all again, just wanted to share with you a reply I recieved from support on this issue. ()am using the NTSC version, but am I assuming it also applies to PAL).
) Clean up temp files from\Start menu\Programs\Accessories\System
Tools\Disk Cleanup.
2) Uninstall VideoStudio 8 from control panel Add/Remove programs
3) Delete following folders
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead
Systems\Ulead VideoStudio
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound
Software Inc
=>C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\My Documents\Ulead VideoStudio
=>C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\
4) Reinstall VideoStudio 8 again
5) Install the latest VS8 patch that you can download here:
ftp://ftp.ulead.com/pub/updates/videost ... tch1_e.exe
Be sure that DMA is enabled for IDE hard disks.
1. Control Panel: System: Hardware tab: Device Manager.
2. Click "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
3. Double click on Primary IDE Channel: Advanced settings.
4. Be sure Current transfer mode is DMA. (Transfer mode should be DMA
if available in default.)
Download the latest version of DirectX and other necessary updates from
Microsoft:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
Can you please try the following suggestions:
1) Defragement HD. If you haven't done defragment for a long time, it's
better to do it before the operation.
2) Please make sure this video/image file is ok, I suggest you check
it.
3) Be sure that there are no other running applications.
If you have some hardware devices that are currently connected via USB
port like compact flash card reader, removable drives, etc., then
please just unplug them and close all running applications like screen saver
and memory-resident applications (system monitor, anti-virus
application, etc.) as they may cause error as well before performing a data
write/system conflict.
Open VideoStudio, press F6 to open Preference db,
at the EDIT tab, set the resample quality to BEST and Apply color
filter to
NTSC. At the Edit step, select the appropriate Color System (NTSC for
US).
Set the Instant playback target to Preview Window.
Thank you.

yes you have got the bob standard Ulead response. i ignored this as i got that when i had load from stream error! you get this with everything when you send a tech support log to them. thats why it is better to come here at least you get more sense.
yes i have all the patches, totally uptodate. as stated continued from the lastr webboard.
been there seen it done it!
All i can say is did you try the guassian blur technique?? it worked for me.
have a nice xmas!

Dave,
I did try all of this and the only thing I noticed that was different was
the very last step, which was the instant playback target to Preview window. Be default it is set to a dual head device.
Of course, the major difference in my system now is that I upgraded to SP2 and I did a pretty extensive test yesterday with a 4 min all jpg. image project with music and transitions.
So far so good, but I suppose I still need to do some more testing like adding in a few videos, a few more filters, and of course, a few more text lines to see what comes up.
I definatly will keep the guassian blur technique in mind, thanks for that suggestion.
Now maybe the next step is to deal with the pixelation before and after transitions on the video clips I was getting prior to doing all of this..
Happy Holidays to you and all!

I just did my first "test" slideshow as I would like to mix a slideshow in with some of my videos. The resultant MPEG with it's "pulsating pixles" made my beautiful 5 megapixel jpeg's look like the neon sign at a sleezy motel !
The more I learn about UVS, the MORE impressed I am with its function and user-friendly interface!
The LESS impressed I am, however, with its ability to actually do what it is advertised to do!
I upgraded from UVS7 in hopes that UVS8 would fix some of the bugs. In my experience UVS8 is even buggier than UVS7 was!
Now they are working on UVS9 before they even get UVS8 working?
There seems to be a pattern developing here...

i also see a pattern here also.
Lets test VS9 on everyone befoire it is released! perhaps we all have a beta version of it and VS8 doesnt exist in reality.
did anyone get the email from ulead re ideas for VS9?
I told them to release a product that works next time.
Another suggestion to this problem which i did this week.
1) still use gaussian blur.
2) zoom into a part of the picture but do not let it zoom out at speed (difficult) lt it glide.
3) set pics to 72 dpi it may help.
4) check your page swap file. mine was set incorrect. i had 1024 min and 3016 max. this was set by HP. I didnt change it as was mentionedon teh last webboard that a faster PC didnt need it. i set mine to 2048 min and max..
see if this helps .
Happy new year to you all.

The Upadate
Ok, I just did a 250 all jpg redering with some changes as suggested (did not use the gausian blur as it was too many pics).
I had complete success, not a single pulsation.
Although I might say I have made a slight change on how I rendered them and don't know if it makes a difference, but Now, I set up all my project properties manually, DVD 100 % and changed frame type to Framed based instead of the default lower field first.
When I render, I do it as Same as project instead of choosing the DVD rendering (It is the same as DVD when I burn it as there is no need for conversion), and make sure my anti-flicker is on (same as when I change my properties when burning the disk to Highest Quality and Anti Flicker).
The only thing I might even guess at what has changed is that now my Version 7 opens with an error, something about missing an .ini file, which I remembered Deleting manually (uvs.ini). Before I did not get this error, and now I do, which is fine by me cause I wont need to go into 7 anymore (thankfully).
And also, as I mentioned before, Adding the Sp2 to my Xp.
Now, I am by no means saying that following the suggestions I posted from support and rendering the way I do now is a total fixer upper, but I am saying that after doing them exactly my once annoying problem with pulsation is gone, even after a big jpg fest project.
Guess somehow I got lucky and got my program to work as a Christmas Present, but I really wish everyone the best at this problem..
And yes, I agree, I will not be jumping into any new versions until I know what bugs are in (and I waited a long time before jumping to
. Guess Ill go to 9 when V10 comes out.
Happy New Year!

Hi David,
As I've stated recently in the old forum (see the "Ulead Tech Support" thread), this software is full of bugs (major and minor). Ulead are profiting and stringing consumers along with false hope. Consumers may get one major patch if their lucky in the next release, followed by another one in release 10 and so on - after paying for it.
Will this software ever be fixed? Maybe that's a question for the Ulead executives... It depends on whether consumers continue to buy bug ridden new versions. One of the major reasons that corporations release and profit from buggy software is because people will buy it if there is no other option. However, in this case there are many other software options.
Isn't it nice when a release goes into maintenance phase when it should actually be a "BETA" version. The workarounds offered in the read me's in these support boards, not to undermine their usefulness to ripped off consumers, are a joke and should be embarrassing enough for Ulead to lift their game (but no go).
Time is money, so what's the "real" cost of deliberate negligence to the consumer?
Regards,
Michael

what gets me in Digital Video made easy magazine (uk publication) they sing VS8's praises!
Did someone at Ulead pay them one wonders! or did they pay more than Pinnacle for advertising space.
I am not pushing Pinnacle but it appears to be better behaved despite having a patch of nearly 60 mb (ouch that hurts!) and growing!

Greetings,
New to the board and this is the topic that got me here!
I am encouraged to see so many individuals from around the world pulling together to help others and themselves. Anyway enough of the touchy feelly stuff.
I recently completed a large project with multiple mpegs and the only thing that dissappointed me about it was the flickering on some of the photos.
After scouring all the posts for this topic I decided I would try to quantify the problem with some test files similar to what others have done.
I picked a picture which seemed to flicker particularly bad, it seems to especially not like lines and the color green, which were both abundant in my sample picture.
Started off with 5 seconds of black then 5 seconds of the picture and continued with that same sequence until I had evaluated a particular group of transitions. I evaluated FX, 3D, and Film transitions. They were rendered to an MPEG-2 file with Anti-Flicker selected. For FX I did a seperate file with Anti-Flicker not selected to see if there would be a difference.
Results for FX:
Transition Type, Flickered with Anti-Flicker ON, Flickered with Anti-Flicker OFF, Comment
No Transition,N,N
Arrows,Y,Y
Blowout,Y,Y
Burn,N,Y,(Made a difference)
Crossfade,Y,Y,(My favorite)
Diamonds A,Y,Y
Diamonds,Y,Y
Dissolve,Y,Y
Fade to Black,Y,Y
Fly,N,N
Funnel,N,N
Gate,N,N
Iris,Y,Y
Lens,N,N
Mask,N,Y,(Made a difference)
Mosaic,N,N
Power Off,Y,Y
Shatter,Y,Y
Shuffle,Y,Y
Unfold,N,Y,(Made a difference)
Zig Zag Fade,Y,Y
From 3D the following transitions flickered with Anti-Flicker enabled:
Face, Flying Flip, Flying Fold, Folding Box, Squeeze, Whirlpool. The rest were okay.
From Film only Cross flickered with Anti-Flicker enabled. I didn't evaluate 3D or Film with Anti-Flicker OFF.
From my casual observation it appears that whenever VS has to interpolate the picture and the picture has certain elements to it that the program can't settle on, it toggles back and forth thus causing the flicker.
I only tried this with one picture, others pictures may react differently.
For now, I am going to go back through all of my VS project files for my big project and replace my standard transition, Crossfade, with transitions that don't appear to have the flicker problem and re-render.
Hope this helps, I know I have been frustrated by it.

G M ... This "flickering problem" has been a huge annoyance and you can certainly see from the prior posts that we've all tried just about everything to cure it. I've been assuming it is a combination of several things. Personally, I run all of my digital stills through an editing program and convert them to 768 x 576 (I'm not PAL). I know that VS8 does this conversion for me, but I do have less flickering if I take this extra step. I've often wondered why the same picture, used in different parts of a project, can be rock-solid twice and then flicker crazily when inserted the third time. Your tests on the various transitions may shed some much needed light on this problem, and I thank you for taking the time to post them. I have a huge wedding project ahead of me (slides & video) and your post may save me a lot of grief. Pat

Hi David,
All media space (that includes the so called "news"), whether it's print, video, audio, anything, is sold. Money is one driver, but the biggest driver is corporate propaganda since this is a major social control mechanism that makes a handful of people "the owners of the planet" and the rest their slave workers.
