Done all that.
Unfortunately when I imported the files I still couldn't use the 'Insert Digital Media' option.
It just reported that there wasn't anything there.
Not to worry though. I can now copy the files over (finalised or not) and rename them to .mpg files without any issue.
Going through the footage and cutting as required is going to be needed no matter what. It would have been nice to have markers already present so that I could more quickly identify each clip but that isn't a major worry. The tools in VS make is easy to find pieces and cut each clip and to adjust as required.

Can you play the Video_TS folder after transferring to your hard drive using WMP or VLC?
