Compatibility issue with psp X4 and Canon sx50

Post by funygirl38 »

Can anyone help me? I use PSP X4 primarily for my editing software. I love its versatility and do not want to switch. I have a Canon Rebel XT with which I shoot in RAW and use PSP to process without any problems whatsoever but I recently bought a Canon SX50 HS for some of its extra features like eliminating the need for an extra lens and outer display but when I brought the photos from the SX50 up in PSP the images looked as shot from the camera but converted to a grayed out image soon after. They are in RAW format as well just as I've shot with the Rebel. I do not want to use DPP which came with the camera because there's not enough flexibility to do what I want to my photos. Is there an alternate solution to stop them from changing colors. I opened the photos in Light room as well and they appear normal. Only PSP is altering them after they come up.

Can you be more specific? What does " brought the photos up in PSP" mean? Are you looking at thumbnails and/or preview in Manage Mode or is this happening in Edit or Camera RAW Lab?

I suspect that X4 does not support the new camera and this version does not have the engine to convert the RAW files. An alternative would be to simply convert with DPP to TIFF or JPG without manipulation in DPP and do the editing of those images in PSP. DPP would likely do a better job of conversion than X4.

I would agree with MarkZ as well. I use DPP for processing the Raw data because the version for my camera (Canon 5D II) has settings that match what I have in camera profiles.
ie if on a cloudy day I find myself having to increase contrast by two settings and saturation by one setting, then I can apply those same settings in camera and save that profile as 1 of the three saved camera settings and use that for cloudy and overcast days - it then produces jpgs that need little processing and if I can spend less time processing then that is a bonus. For most of my applications the 5616 x 3744 pixel jpg images are more than enough to produce the 1024 x 768 final jpg images.

But back to the question of the OP. I presume they are using PSP raw converter as they are bringing the Raw data into PSP. I further presume that the camera was released after PSP X4 and as such the processing info for that camera was not included in X4 nor in any of its Service Packs and as such is not likely to be updated or supported.

This is one of the flaws in Corel 's and possibly other image processors in that the updates for cameras are included with the Service packs rather than a stand alone modular update that can be quickly updated for every new camera. Lightroom seems to include regular updates without needing to renew the program for each different Raw type.
Considering that there are far more cameras than raw processing capable graphics programs it would be better for camera manufctureres to include an update for say the 10 most popular raw conversion programs rather than the graphics program having to source and obtain and include updates for every new camera that comes out.
A bit akin to how virus programs and spy ware programs do regular updates for the latest viruses and malware. This seems to be modular and only require small updates rather than a large update of the program each time a new virus is discovered.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

What I meant by brought up was opened, sorry. I was wondering if it was a matter of supporting the new camera but could not wrap my head around the problem. X4 supported my older Canon Rebel XTI but the Canon SX50 is much newer. I converted one file to TIFF, opened it in X4 and it was fine. Thank you so very much for the advice. I know it must seem silly to resist change but I'm a poor old dinosaur who prefers to work with what she knows and X4 has been a good little program for me as I like to play with HDR and other elements of X4 which DPP is too simple for. It seems a bit of a pain in the patella to convert to TIFF each time especially since TIFF is a large format but then I likely won't convert every file except the ones I really want. You saved me a lot of headache. I very much appreciate everyone's feedback.

Exactly . . . you end up converting only a fraction of the images and most often if I use TIFF as an intermediate format I delete it when I have the final product in jpg because of the size of the file. You still have the "negative" in the RAW file and if the processing is a bit more complex then you could save a .pspimage.
